I’ve been to Red Gum BBQ a few times now. The first and second visits had a real wow factor, but by the third and fourth visits, including this one, it felt more just okay.

The food overall is good. Our first brisket was quite dry, but after we mentioned it to the manager, they replaced it with a much juicier and more tender piece, which was delicious. Still, it did make us wonder why the dry one was served in the first place.

We were told the 1/4 chicken wasn’t available, yet later noticed the next table had chicken. When we asked, the waiter explained it was only for set share dishes. Clearer communication upfront would have helped, as we may have ordered differently. Staff could use a bit more training and better knowledge of the menu.

Dessert was a highlight—the cherry pie with ice cream was especially delicious.

I wouldn’t rush back, but for first-time visitors, it’s worth a try. Just note the BBQ is cooked indoors, so your clothes will smell smoky (which I personally don’t mind).

Great brisket and pork ribs.

Sausage for some reason is a bit tough/chewy despite its being cooked. Smoked chicken is nice but I just wish they let it cook a bit longer as some part might be a bit too pink.

I tried the ribs (lamb, pork and beef), beef some reason is quite tough and lacking flavour. The lamb and pork is quite nice though.

Shredded pork just ok ish but kids love em.

I would probly stick go the brisket and baby back ribs for next trip.

Just a FYI to your reply, take my feedback and do better please. I was not looking for some sort of savings options, we were on holidays! We just wished we went elsewhere and spend the same amount for better food! You have the wrong person btw, we never ordered dessert or ordered 8 beers? We had apple juice x4 a in-house peach tea and a martini. Please see photo attached of the drinks. 400g of meat? Where? The 2 thin slices of beef and 1/3 cup of pulled pork? I tried to send an email of receipt but your email must not be working due to the constant complaints. We visited after hearing great things from locals at Arthur’s Seat, but unfortunately the experience didn’t live up to the hype. We spent $278 for a family of five, ordering the Happy as a Pig platter along with fries, drinks, mac and cheese sticks and mac salad.
The serving size on the platter was surprisingly small for the price — it included two slices of brisket, two wings, some pulled pork, slaw, cornbread and half a chicken. The brisket was disappointing and the pulled pork was a little dry. The chicken looked undercooked, though I understand the colour may be from smoking — I still didn’t feel confident enough to try it.
Another frustration was that the mac and cheese wasn’t available, even though it was still listed online. It would really help if the website menu matched the in-store one. The mac salad also had a very unusual aftertaste that none of us enjoyed.
We also had to share our table with other people, which we didn’t expect — luckily we were almost finished by then. Normally we’d sit and enjoy our meal together, but our kids didn’t like the food so we asked for takeaway boxes and left. Unfortunately the food never got eaten once we got home.
On a positive note, the drinks were great and our waiter was lovely — really friendly and attentive. We didn’t feel right complaining at the table because he was so nice.
Overall, for the price, the food and portions didn’t justify the cost and we left disappointed. If you’re local it may be worth trying, but I wouldn’t recommend travelling out of your way for it.

Their American-style BBQ is absolutely amazing. As soon as you get out of the car, you can smell the rich smoky aroma in the air. Every piece of meat is tender, juicy, and melts in your mouth — nothing is dry at all.

What really stands out are their house-made sausages and house-pickled vegetables, both of which are full of flavour and definitely worth trying. They also have a great selection of unique IPAs to choose from, which pair perfectly with the BBQ.

One important thing to note: make sure you book in advance. During holidays or busy periods, it can be very hard to get a table without a reservation.

Food was excellent. Smoked to perfection. We had the beef chuck rib, sausages, chicken, lamb ribs, slaw, pickles & shortbread. Delicious. Atmosphere matches the vibe and the smokehouse feels. Staff were friendly and helpful. Sauces were great too. Good selection of beers. Honestly surprised it’s not rated higher. Would definitely go again!

Good meats. So good that we ate it before I could take photos. Love the rustic barn feel. Service could be better – found it very hard to order additional food. Friendly though. Tbh I think an online or we code ordering system would really help a place like this.

Had the lamb ribs, beef brisket, and mac and cheese — everything tasted really good! The lamb ribs were cooked perfectly, super tender, and the brisket had great flavor. The mac and cheese was hot and creamy, went really well with the meat.

Only downside was the meat came out almost cold, which was a bit disappointing since it was a cold day and we wanted something warm. But honestly, the flavor made up for it — just wish it was served hotter!

Everything on the plate from the brisket to the sausage is faultless. Everything seasoned well & cooked to perfection.
I really liked the brisket as it was juicey (unlike other places I’ve tried in town). Plenty of sauces to go around as well,to shake up your taste buds.
Just a personal take would be if it had a bread bun/dinner roll to make your own sandwich.
The staff were great and the crowd were laid back too.
Would definitely make the drive up again for another sitting!

Meat feast! Our table of 4 adults and two tweens shared a pit master tray and happy as a pig tray w a side of coleslaw and fries. Felt the menu was lacking a plain green garden salad to cut through the deliciousness/richness of all the meat. Rivals any of Melbourne city’s options. Worth the day trip!

We visited on December 23rd around 1:30 pm. We’ve been here before and the service was fine, but this visit was very disappointing. The person who received us at the front was extremely rude and impolite from the very first moment. Her attitude was dismissive, negative, and unwelcoming throughout the entire visit, and it had a clear impact on our experience. This is not what you expect from someone in a customer facing role. The waiter at the table was friendly, and the food was generally okay, although the wait time was quite long. One issue was a chicken dish that looked raw. When we asked about it, we were told it had been cooked for eight hours. That may be the case, but we were not familiar with this style of preparation, and chicken that looks raw is understandably concerning. The dish was taken back to the kitchen, but the response from the front lady was rude again we were basically told to take it back and eat it anyway Super unpolite. We weren’t convinced and didn’t feel comfortable eating it. I then spoke to our waiter again to explain that we were still uncomfortable. Eventually, the dish was replaced, but only after unnecessary tension and poor communication. We were visiting with family from Spain, which made the experience particularly disappointing. While the food can be tasty and place nice, the overall experience was let down by very poor front of house service should treat people like this. Not a great experience
