Rare Restaurant delivered a standout evening from start to finish. The room feels intimate and polished, with just enough buzz to keep things lively. We started with oysters and a crisp cocktail, then moved to impeccably cooked steaks—deep sear, perfect temp, and sauces that complemented rather than covered. Seasonal sides (think roasted veg and silky potatoes) were dialed-in and shareable. Service was warm, knowledgeable, and perfectly paced—never rushed, never waiting. The wine list had thoughtful by-the-glass picks that paired beautifully. If you’re looking for a modern steak-forward dinner that still feels creative and personal, Rare lives up to its name. Would happily return for another round.

Cozy atmosphere. Small, quaint and nice bar display. Wine selection could be bigger and have some better choices. Food was tasty – no complaints. The steak was very tender, cook was on point (med/rare) but there was no sear on the steak which takes big points away. Good service. Offered complimentary frog legs for our party to try which was super thoughtful and observant too since we were discussing trying them but nobody pulled the trigger. Solid 3.5⭐

An intimate and comforting experience. One of the warmest establishments I visited to eat while in Peterborough for work. The menu is intentional, thoughtful, and confident. My waitress was lovely, attentive, so kind, efficient, and made me one of the loveliest lavender gin martinis I’ve ever had. I’ll definitely be back next time I’m in town.

Amazing experience! Love this place. Is nice for special occasions or just if you want to try something new that other places in town don’t have. In my experience, the plates I tried had perfect taste and were unique. Good presentation, and the restaurant is pretty. I love the lighting inside and the general atmosphere. The waitress is really friendly and attentive. I will definitely go back!

We attended a private wedding at Rare and it was unforgettable. The atmosphere was intimate and beautifully set up, and the team made the entire evening feel effortless. The food was extraordinary — every dish was thoughtfully prepared with incredible attention to detail. You can truly taste the quality of the ingredients, especially the beef, which was cooked to perfection. Service was warm, attentive, and seamless. Rare made an already special occasion even more memorable. Highly recommend for anyone who values outstanding food and genuine hospitality.

We had a lovely evening at rare, the server Eve was very nice and helpful. The food was phenomenal. We had the porterhouse steak which was so tender and flavourful as well as the bone marrow appetizer, which was delicious. We enjoyed all four desserts. We couldn’t pick our favourite one, the cocktails were lovely and so was the wine. would highly recommend this place again and again.

4.6 seems about right for Peterborough.

Eve was great, her service was wonderful. So quiet – it was a really nice change from the majority of places. Highly recommend if you want a nice atmosphere where you can focus on the food and who you’re with.

Steak was an A, wife thought it was one of the best she’d had.
Brussel Salad A-, a complete surprise for me how good this was.
Cornish Hen a B+, standard and quite good. Could have used bacon more prominently.
Octopus + sauce bumped it to B+, this is a weird critiscm but the black olives on a dish like this, in a place like this, should not be the ones out of a cheap can. I love black olives, happily ate them and I’m no snob, but these were just a weirdly “cheap” addition to what should be a pretty elegant dish.
Tartare C, funky crackers that impeded the flavor of the tartare itself. Portion was a bit on the small side but that’s fine. Just really did not think the hodgepodge of various heavily flavored crackers did this any favors.

Lemon Cheescake was pretty good. Cheesecake is my favorite dessert and I make a really good one so I can’t grade it without a massive curve.

Absolutely will be back. I do think if you’re looking for a nice spot in town for a grown up dinner, you’d be making a great choice.
