This is the perfect mix of coffee, food, Internet cafe and shopping. Need a quick coffee they have drive thru, need a unique gift they have a store full of one of a kind merchandise, need a quiet place with internet they have little quiet seating areas, need a place to meet a friend they have tables and front porch prefect for that, want some food with your coffee they have donuts! (Think they are made right there) A Special Gem in Murphy NC, definitely got to check this place out. I’ve been several times and never disappointed, best of all family owned!

Rare Bird truly is that rare bird. It’s in the details. The way the logo in the center of the menu on the wall above the coffee bar looks immaculately designed by computer yet is unmistakenly and painstakingly hand drawn. The way that when you shut the door behind you you feel as if you’ve stepped out of Murphy NC and into any down town big city coffee shop; taking an instant dimensional trip as if being transported through a magic wardrobe into a land of talking animals and Turkish delight. Yet the smell of essential oils and polished wood is unmistakenly Appalachian. All these small touches combined with the fact that the coffee and everything else they serve is amazing, along with top tier customer service and even used vinyl and assorted handmade gifts thrown in make this place the only proper coffee shop in the tri state area and a uniquely chill spot, complete with couches in the rear, an old fashioned sink in the sparkling clean restroom and super chill low key folk music playing on a quality soundsystem. The last two days I have had off from work. It has been rainy. Both times I went in and Olivia and Rebekah made my day with their amazing barista skillz, cute sweaters and magneticaly mischievous grins.Thank you to everyone who makes this place so great. If you haven’t checked it out you’re missing out.

Rare Birds Emporium is an absolute hidden gem in Murphy, North Carolina! This place is seriously so freaking cute — from the moment you walk in, you’re surrounded by the perfect mix of cozy coffee shop vibes and unique, vintage, rustic charm.
The shop is full of one-of-a-kind treasures — think handmade aprons, trout-themed decor, Bigfoot goodies, mountain-style gifts, and all sorts of quirky, North Carolina-inspired finds that you won’t see anywhere else. Every corner has something cool and original, and it feels like you’re walking through a little mountain boutique that was curated with so much love and personality.
And let’s talk about the coffee — absolutely delicious! Smooth, flavorful, and made just right. Whether you’re grabbing a latte, drip, or something iced, they know what they’re doing behind the counter.
It’s the kind of place that makes you want to sip slowly, browse the shelves, and just hang out for a while. Definitely a must-stop if you’re in the Murphy area — support local and check this place out, you won’t regret it! ☕️ ️

I don’t drink coffee but went to check out the gift shop. I love this store & would be a regular customer if I lived in Murphy. Great atmosphere, welcoming & cozy. Lots of unique gift ideas at reasonable prices. Kate was very friendly and helpful. The story behind the business is very interesting too. Take one trip to shop & another to look at the building, looking up to see what’s there!

As part of my quest to visit all 100 counties in NC, I stopped in to this shop for a snack, a browse, and to get a little work done during my visit to Cherokee County.
I had a nice iced matcha with strawberry foam and a decent apple streudal muffin.
Seating can be a little close together and at a premium in this busy shop, but I was able to work for about an hour before heading out. There is also a small amount of outdoor seating.
Good WiFi. Didn’t look for plug ins for charging.
Nice bathroom at the back and nice local merchandise.
Parking is a little tight because there is also a cute drive thru window.
Will definitely stop in again when I’m in the area! Staff was super nice. Prices were pretty reasonable.

This is a great place to stop. We had some of their doughnuts and a hot tea and hot latte, everything was delicious and it was a cozy and relaxing stop. We didn’t wait too long for our items, staff was friendly. We played cards and people were meeting for coffee and shopping. There are tables for two and a few for larger groups. The shopping looked to be by booth. A lot of local artists had items there: pottery, paintings, wood items and so on. There seemed to be sufficient parking in front of the shop.
