Nice little out of the way type of place.
Everything we ate, we liked.
I had the tater kegs with the spring Chicken Sandwich. It was very tender and juicy as well. Tater kegs were crispy and dense but delicate.
My son is autistic and very choosy with his food. He chose to try the steak chislic and the fries. He loved the steak. He said he wants it every day now. He said it was very juicy.
My boyfriend had the buffalo wings and ranch, and he liked the street corn it came with. The coke float was fantastic. Even the ice cream was high quality.
So me and the wife went to Ranch & Roost and I wasn’t expecting much — just figured we’d grab a burger and go home.Instead I walked out questioning every restaurant decision I’ve made since 1998.
You walk in and the place looks like a Pinterest barn that actually feeds people. Clean floors, big wood tables, deer on the wall, and literal boxes of potatoes sitting there like they’re on display at the State Fair. Then you see the sign:”American Beef Ground In-House Daily.”Which sounded impressive but I figured… alright cowboy, prove it.
I ordered the Mushroom & Swiss burger with parmesan fries and sweet tea.
My wife got the steak tips and fries.
Then something suspicious happened.
Our food came out in like 3-5 minutes.
Three.
To
Five
Minutes.
I leaned over and told my wife,
“Well… this is either gonna be amazing or we’re about to eat leftovers from the Clinton administration.”Then I took a bite…
And now I’m irritated.Because it was legit incredible. The burger tasted like the cow had a good childhood.Soft bun. Perfect seasoning. Real beef flavor. Not that frozen hockey puck meat some places try to pass off as “handmade.”
Then came the fries.Real potatoes.Thick cut.
Fried in beef tallow like our grandparents fought wars for.Meanwhile other restaurants out here serving fries that taste like cardboard dipped in disappointment. Then we tried the chislic.
Listen carefully:Best chislic I’ve had in Sioux Falls.
Not dry.Not chewy. Not sad little cubes of overcooked regret.Perfect crust. Juicy inside. Seasoned right. And they hand you this dipping sauce that looks like it could repair a broken marriage. (And it comes in containers with fixed lids!!!!!)
And the kid running the counter looked about 18 years old but acted like a restaurant owner with a business degree and a retirement plan.
Polite. Professional. Knew the menu.
Meanwhile I’m still trying to remember my debit PIN.
The Only Problems
-We spent about $50 for two people.
But honestly I’d rather pay $50 for real food than $35 for disappointment and a drive-thru apology.
-could use pads on the heavy chairs, they dont slide well and create alot of unnecessary noise.
-the home homebrewed tea is taken over by too much sugar.
Final Verdict
Ranch & Roost just committed a dangerous act:
They made food that’s fast AND actually good.
Now everywhere else is gonna taste like a compromise. If you haven’t tried it yet — go.
If you don’t like it, you probably also think gas station nachos are gourmet.
We ordered the Mushroom and Swiss hamburger and the Cheeseburger and they were DELECTABLE….juicy, super-flavorful, and the best burger I have had in years! The accoutrement of Keg Tots and Fries were excellent and perfectly cooked…and damn tasty!
Being attached to the BigLost Meadery allowed for drink options.
Today, I went back and tried the Street Tacos with steak and Street Corn….absolutely perfectly cooked and DELICIOUS! Also dabbled into the Meadery with a Lemon Ginger Mead…it was like sipping “medicine” for the super cold day we had today at -11F.
Next up with be trying the Chicken sandwiches and wings…
Lastly, we met one of the owners (Sam) who was out in the restaurant/bar making sure everything was up to standard and letting us ask questions about the Mead they brew. Fantastic!
The bad:
It was cold in the building. It was very noisy and echoing inside.
They give us our food in a bag like it was a to go order. This makes it hard to eat the food since you do not have a plate or utensils. You have to order your food at the counter or on your phone. You do not have a waiter and they still ask you to tip. It is like you are at a fast food place but you are getting charged restaurant prices.
No one from the meadory asked if we wanted anything. One of the meadory employees talked to the people at the table behind us for about 45 minutes.
We probably won’t be back unless they change things.
