Reviews
Tucked away in a nondescript Torrance plaza, **Ramen & Tsukemen TAO** feels like a secret Tokyo ramen-ya smuggled into SoCal—minimalist wood counters, soft lighting, and only 20 seats that book out weeks in advance ✨. This isn’t your average noodle joint; it’s a Michelin Bib Gourmand darling that treats ramen like fine dining without the pretension. The open kitchen hums quietly as Chef Tao crafts each bowl with monk-like focus.
The **signature black truffle tsukemen** is pure artistry: springy house-made noodles served cold alongside a rich, pork-chicken-seafood broth that’s been simmering for days. Dip, slurp, repeat—the umami explodes with earthy truffle depth, balanced by yuzu zest and perfectly medium-boiled egg. Even the **shoyu ramen** elevates classics: crystal-clear broth with layers of smoked oil, tender chashu that melts, and noodles with that ideal al dente bite .
What sets TAO apart is the **boutique experience**—every detail curated, from the ceramic bowls to the complimentary barley tea. The menu is small and seasonal, encouraging trust in the chef (go omakase-style with add-ons). Service is warm yet precise; staff explain dishes without hovering.
Only docking 0.4 because the no-reservation lunch rush means a potential wait (line up 15 mins early), and portions lean refined rather than belly-busting. Parking’s easy in the lot. TAO proves ramen can be sophisticated without losing soul—Michelin got this one spot-on. It’s not just dinner; it’s an event. Already craving my next visit; the truffle tsukemen haunts my dreams.
It’s honestly the best ramen I’ve ever had in my life.
The broth is rich, and the noodles are perfectly chewy.
If I had to point out one thing, it’s that it’s quite salty — but other than that, it’s absolutely perfect.
We ordered the Regular White Miso Ramen $15 , Large Chashu Miso Tsukemen $22.50, and Regular Chashu White Miso Ramen $19.50 .Everything was delicious. The broth was rich and flavorful, the noodles were thick, and the char siu roast pork was very tender. The soy marinated egg was perfectly cooked, with a soft yolk and a balanced sweet salty flavor.
There are signs on the walls explaining how to eat certain items, like the spicy ball, which was fun and helpful. The atmosphere is simple and no frills. The restaurant is small, with only about 14 -16 seats, so we waited around 20 minutes. When we left, there was already a long line.
Service was friendly and attentive. Parking can be a bit challenging, the lot is small with tight spaces, but there is some nearby street parking available.
Maybe it was just the night I went, but I waited in line for around 20 minutes to have my order taken for takeout and wasn’t acknowledged or greeted by staff. Never ended up getting my order taken or helped so I decided to order online instead since I’ve heard so many great reviews about the food that I was still determined to try it. Food was ready for pick up after 45 minutes but I never received a call or text letting me know it was ready. Thankfully, I went by to check on my order.
Food was still warm and packaged nicely. All utensils were provided and the noodles were packaged separated from the toppings (which I liked) then the broth was in its own container. The large ramen was a good portion of noodles. Only one bite of pork came with mine though (seriously one bite). That disappointed me. The flavor of the ramen was good but it definitely wasn’t worth the frustrations. Bummed about this one.
The place was small and intimate but I don’t mind that, just expect that it can’t sit a lot of people at one time so you could experience high wait times.
