Little bar in tiny town. We’re trying out a lot of “dive bars” in the omaha area. Population 94 and dropping. The bartender/cook/cashier was really nice and the broasted chicken was pretty good. The bride enjoyed the garlic green beans… me not so much. French fries hot and crispy. Beer cold but in plastic mug.

Anyone who’s been to Malmo (38 minutes north of Lincoln, 56 minutes west of Omaha) knows three things to be true: you’ll find friendly staff, eat some outstanding food, and be told that there’s “always free beer tomorrow!” Despite Malmo having a population of only 94, the town’s population grows 50-100% in size at times (particularly on Friday and Saturday nights) when area residents flock to the hamlet to spend a night laughing and chattering away with friends, family, and neighbors.
I had been to RK’s a couple of times in the past for drinks, but this time around I wanted to give their grub a try. As a first-time diner myself, it took me a moment to realize that the restaurant doesn’t hand out traditional menus as you’d expect. Instead, a large marquee board (similar to that you’d expect to see at a vendor at a county fair) graces the wall and invites customers to order anything from their famous wings to their broasted chicken, or smoked ribs to burgers or other nightly specials.
Since I was there on a Friday, I opted for the Mahi-mahi fish dinner. For those unfamiliar with this dish, Mahi-mahi is more commonly known as the “common dolphinfish.” They are typically found in the Gulf of Mexico, Hawaii, or the Indian Ocean, but they have a tendency to migrate to Malmo for their Fish-fry Fridays! This crispy, golden-brown lean protein was only on my plate for a matter of minutes before I was forced to “settle” for some crispy fries, buttery toast, and coleslaw. One of my friends ordered a side of Texas toothpicks, an uncommon bar offering in which jalapenos are coated, fried, and then seasoned with paprika, onion powder, and other spices. For those looking for a little crunch and spice, they’re a great side option!
Although I only tried a couple of RK’s offerings, many locals truly claim that they have the best bar food around. Burgers are juicy, ribs fall off the bone, chicken wings are tender and Tex-Mex Saturday nights are a hit. There’s far too many options to cover in only one post, but I guess that means that we’ll need to lead a collective effort to sample the entire menu!
Side-note for drink connoisseurs: ask for the “Hawaiian punch” mixed drink. I won’t spoil its ingredients here, but it’s a real treat!

Rk’s Bar & Grill located in the Malmo metroplitan area (population 95) is a great little backwoods Bar and Grill! Located approx: 45 minutes north of Lincoln NE is definately off the beaten trail. The bar has been around for years claims Kelsey, the pleasant lady that works the bar. They offer a rib special on Tuesdays that comes with a whole delictable slab of smoked ribs, a smoked baked potatoe, a side of green beans and bread. Add a draft beer and I spent a whooping $15! What a bargin. They offer fish specials on Fridays as weel with Mahi Mahi and smoked Carp being the offerings. I will be back on a Friday I promise. You must pin a dollar on the ceiling as a local tradition. The locals kept to themselves on Tuesday so bring a friend. Speaking of cash, bring some as they don’t take credit cards. I suggest you lock the bathroom door as the picture shows or it may get a bit close and personal, lol. Also, don’t plan on being on your phone. You loose service when you enter Malmo but it all returns as you get close to Weston. Great little place and my first introduction to the OFF THE BEATEN PATH BAR & GRILLS SERIES of Nebraska.

RK’s is a treasure that I feel fortunate to have stumbled upon in the small town of Malmo Nebraska. It is truly a step back in time. The town folk were catching up on the weeks news, the weather and their families.
The young man that helped us was waiting tables cooking and tending bar. The food was great, tasted like homemade and came out hot. I don’t know if he was the owner or not but he certainly took care of place as though he was. A great change of pace.

Went here for the 1st time this afternoon. They really do have great food. I’ll definitely be back. The Kind of place where they drop what they are doing to make you lunch. For $10 you get a half rack of ribs (Tues special), & choice of sides. I got Texas toast, greens beans & a full potato. Something that sets them apart on top of great food, is they do the little things. I got take out. They have a side of melted butter & herbs for the potato, & some sort of spicy ranch for my appetizers (Texas twigs) ATM will give you cash if you forget to bring any

I took my grandkids for a little road trip and we wanted to try some place new. We enjoy finding non-chain restaurants. The place is older but clean, not fancy but felt like an average small town bar. The service was great, our order was taken quickly. We had our drinks and appetizers before the kids had time to get antsy and our food arrived right on time. I was surprised at how fast it was because they were quite busy. The food was very good. My grandkids loved the boasted chicken and mini corn dogs. I ordered the beef cheesesteak, it was served on garlic texas toast which was a pleasant surprise. Our server couldn’t have been more friendly or welcoming. The kidd and I thought it was a great experience.
