The burger was juicy and straightforward in the best way — no unnecessary gimmicks, just solid flavor and a soft bun that holds everything together. The fries were crispy, and the portions were generous. If you’re into comfort food, this place hits the spot without trying too hard.
Service felt casual and efficient, matching the relaxed atmosphere. Overall, R.J. Grunts isn’t about being trendy — it’s about dependable, satisfying American comfort food in a fun, nostalgic setting.
Stopped in for a bite, never been before. The menu was intriguing, so I tried a burger and a sammie—both were tasty and satisfying. The chips were a bit soggy, but the overall vibe of the place made up for it. There’s something homey and comforting about the ambiance that made the experience enjoyable. I’ll definitely be back—and next time, I’ll ask for extra crispy chips.
Maybe we haven’t visited this one in the winter, but I hadn’t remembered the “soup of the day special.” For a cup of soup, the charge was whatever the high temperature of the day was. When we visited, the charge was 49 cents for one cup of either chicken noodle or “loaded potato” soup. We ordered three potato soups and one chicken soup. The chicken soup was well seasoned and satisfying. I didn’t taste the potato soup, and my fellow diners seemed content with this one.
I chose a tuna melt and was pleased with the quantity and quality of the tuna salad. The house-made potato chips were a crunchy, salty complement for my sandwich.
My partner chose a cheeseburger, barely cooked. She always asks for her burgers and steaks to be cooked “as little as your health laws permit.” This one was bloody, so she was very pleased.
Our out-of-towners ordered (he) maple-glazed salmon and (she) a patty melt. He loved the salmon and inhaled it. She liked the melt, but didn’t eat much because she wanted to save tummy room for a chocolate sundae. She loved the sundae.
The dining room is dark and it feels crowded, though only a few booths were occupied when we visited. Our server was attentive and patient and he graciously removed the “restaurant surcharge” from our bill. We rewarded him with a higher tip because we feel servers and other restaurant staff ought to be recognized for their hard work.
The surcharge goes entirely to the restaurant and whatever costs management feels need a boost.
Servers and bus people at restaurants still rely heavily on tips, so it seems more fair to reward them than to give the restaurant even more money, above the already increased price of food.
Our friends loved R.J.’s, so it was a successful outing. Plus, our silverware came with large, double-ply napkins, perfect for slurping soup!
I decided to take my own daughter here for lunch today, as we frequently dine at Lettuce Entertain You restaurants but my daughter had never been here.
The aroma of delicious food was bouncing down the street as we approached the restaurant.
We were promptly greeted and seated. I looked around the restaurant and immediately had a BLAST from the PAST!! Everything looked EXACTLY as I remembered from my childhood, with the exception of a missing salad bar that used to be set up in the center of the restaurant.
Our server, Kylie, quickly came over to take our order. We ordered the potato skins as an appetizer and they were AMAZING!! We both decided that we wanted to try a malt so, we ordered the “Healthier” malt options, made with yogurt and low fat milk. I got a mix of coffee and peanut butter and my daughter got coffee. WOW! What a delicious treat!
We both then ordered burgers. I got the bacon cheddar burger and my daughter ordered the Grunt Burger. Both were incredible. However, I should have chosen the chips instead of the fries, because my daughter’s chips were delish and the fries were just okay.
After TOTALLY enjoying our meal, I had to take a washroom break and let’s just say that I’m happy that I ate before going to the washroom. Though the restaurant had basically just opened for lunch and there were very few people dining, the single use washroom reeked of urine and didn’t appear to be very clean. They really need to get that in order.
All in all, the dining experience was quite enjoyable and the food was VERY good. Kylie’s service was impeccable!
Service matches the vibe: friendly and informal. You do not come here for polish or refinement, but for a good, hearty meal in a place with character. Portions are generous and prices are fair. A fun choice if you want something local, unpretentious, and genuinely rooted in Chicago history.
