We found this restaurant online and had very high expectations. The line was short—we waited about 30 minutes—and it was well-organized. The place is small but doesn’t feel cramped. The menu is great and very well-explained. We tried four types of dumplings and they were sensational. My favorite was the lamb one. The cucumber salad was also very tasty. Everything was so flavorful; we loved it!

Whenever I’m in Chicago, Qing Xiang Yuan is a non-negotiable stop. I’ve tried plenty of dumpling houses over the years, especially those specializing in Xiao Long Bao, and QXY still stands as the best overall dumpling experience I’ve found. The consistency in quality, presentation, service, and value keeps it firmly at the top of my list.

The space is modern, clean, and inviting, with a clear view of the dumpling prep area that adds an extra layer of appreciation for the craft. Every dumpling arrives perfectly formed, flavorful, and delicately cooked, whether steamed, pan-fried, or boiled.

Service is always warm and efficient, and the menu is wide enough to explore without feeling overwhelming. On this visit, I also discovered their pre-prepped frozen dumplings, which are tempting to stock up on when I’m not in town. That said, there’s something undeniably satisfying about sitting down here and enjoying their dumplings fresh—no effort, no hassle, just pure deliciousness.

If you love dumplings, put Qing Xiang Yuan at the top of your Chicago list. It never disappoints.

This was the worst dining experince I had in Chicago. We should have followed our instincts and gone elsewhere when we noticed all the people in the restaurant were not chinese. (Not a good sign) There was a long line and the wait was 30 minutes for a table. When we got our seats we realized we (party of 6) were squeezed into a table meant for 4 people. Very uncomfortable and tight so much so that we knocked water all over. The service team were nice and efficient. The dining experience was just not comfortable. Many lights near the hallway to the bathroom were not on or broken. Very creepy. Bathroom was a disaster, water for the sink was a trikle. We ordered the pork with cabbage, the beef with cilantro and lamb with dill. Do note these are dumplings, not xiao long bao which is much different and harder to make. Only the pork with cabbage dumplings was any good. The texture for the beef and lamb as dumplings just did not work. Very dry and the meat sort of crumbled. On another note, the dumpling skins all broke when we lifted them from the bamboo steamer, letting all the juice drain out. This despite our efforts to take them out gently. We were also not given any spoons or ginger for the dumplings. To enjoy the juice from the dumplings you would usually place the dumplings on a spoon to capture the juice. Sadly the food was a huge disappointment, especially given the price of the dumplings. Unlike other restaurants in the area, tea and rice needs to be ordered separately and not free. There are so many places that are way better in chinatown. The price to quantity/ quality ratio is poor. I will not be returning.

Outstanding. This local owner built a legend. These are the best dumplings in town and there is a meaningful bonus!

SKEWERS – the BBQ section is the hidden gem for your inner carnivore or vegan. Go for it. Charcoal grilled.

Perfect, amazing, warm and delicious dumps with wonderful and creative filling combinations. This restaurant is a well oiled machine with just the right amount of bustle and crowded that makes you feel like you’re part of something without being completely cramped. Top notch service every time I’m there. Shout out to our server Caleb who had a great vibe and was super competent with the menu and efficiency.

QXY is a highly-regarded spot for a reason! I respect and appreciate a spot that knows what they do and they continue to do it well. And QXY knows dumplings.

We split three servings of dumplings – the lamb and coriander, the wagyu beef, and the pork and pickled cabbage. The lamb was my surprising favorite and full of flavor, while the pork was the favorite among my table. The wagyu beef while not bad at all, simply did not impress against its competition.

The table comes equipped with the soy sauce, vinegar, and chili – all necessities to personalize and elevate your own dumpling experience.

This is not a spot to sit and linger, the food comes out quick, you eat quick, and you go. Because you know there is a line waiting to eagerly take your spot.

ordered some dumplings to-go and picked them up easily—only waited a few minutes even though the restaurant was packed. the to-go box was very pretty and the dumplings were packed well. you could even use the container they came in to heat them all up! didn’t end up eating the dumplings until an hour or so later and they were still delicious! we got steamed lamb and coriander as well as pork and cabbage. both were great and very clearly made fresh! i personally liked the lamb and coriander much more, but you can’t go wrong with pork and cabbage! great place and i’d definitely recommend.

I visited this restaurant last night, and it was an incredible experience! The food was absolutely amazing—especially the dumplings, which were fresh, flavorful, and perfectly steamed. The presentation was simple yet inviting, and everything tasted authentic and well-prepared. The tea was a standout—it complemented the meal beautifully and added a soothing touch to the dining experience. The atmosphere felt cozy and lively, with a clean and minimalist setup that made the food the star of the show. Highly recommend this spot for anyone who loves great dumplings and a warm cup of tea!

A surprise find! Ordered 3 kinds of dumplings and they were all delicious! The crab roe and pork steamed were my favorite! The beef and onion were juicy and delicious. The vegetarian with tofu and cabbage was fresh.

The flavors were on point and the best part was most of the dumplings had soup inside! Almost like XLB, soup dumplings! It was a welcomed surprise, so be careful when you bite into your first one! Soup can spray at you!

Had the wood ear mushroom and spicy potato appetizers. Service was friendly and fast. Oolong tea we ordered was a great compliment.

Recommended.

We had a great experience at this dumpling place in Chicago Chinatown. The wait system is very efficient. There was a line when we arrived and they told us it might take up to 30 minutes. We actually got a table in about 10 minutes. Be ready to go back quickly once you receive the text message because if you do not make it in time, your name will be removed from the list very fast.

The food was really tasty. We ordered the Full Blood Wagyu dumplings and they were absolutely delicious. The special black Chinese tea was also fantastic and went perfectly with the meal.
