Started with the Frittura sampler. One sausage arancino, one eggplant arancino, one panzarotto and two fried mozzarella balls with marinara (only one in photo because my hungry toddler has the fastest hands in the East). Peak aroncini. The method is flawless. Other than changing the flavors of the ingredients to suit personal tastes, you couldn’t get better. The marinara is a little oversweet for my tastes, but it’s great for what it is.
The Diavola was our red sauce choice. Spicy salami, fresh mozzarella, basil. The edges of the salami were delightfully crisped and the flavor was great. Really good quality ingredients.
White Sauce: We got an Onion Tart the first time we came here and I crave it all the time. Still phenomenal. Italian cream sauce, caramelized onions, nutmeg, Gruyère, bacon. No one is doing caramelized onions this well locally below $50/head dishes. I’m an onion obsessive and I’m tellin’ ya folks, they’re doing it right. This is my #1 on the whole menu.
Nothing soupy about either pizza. We got a delicate crust kissed with fire. White sauce was better than red sauce, but both are batting 90th percentile for NoVa pizza joints easily.
I saw some hype about the paninos so I grabbed the meatball to try. I try to always grab one experimental dish when I’m out just to see if there’s any new favorites to be had. Honestly, this wasn’t my new favorite. The bread was great and had a very satisfying outer crust. It was a very simple construction, but that let the ingredients come through. I think I prefer a meatball with more spice. Mozzarella quality was great and it couldn’t have been better prepared overall. If you’re someone who prefers variations on a more “plain” flavor profile, I think you’re going to love this. Not for me, but I’d heartily recommend it to the right person.
How much is two pizzas, a full sized meatball panino, and the most expensive Appetizer on the menu? $64.34. That’s it. If people have lost track, large pizzas at most fast food pizza places are pushing $20. This is beyond fair for the price.
And let me throw in a shout-out for the consistently good service, also. They’re always so kind to us when we have our 2-yeard-old in tow.
When it comes to toppings, they do as good a job as most better pizza joints, so I won’t go into the specific toppings we chose, other than to say they were spot-on what we expected and we were very happy with them. Since it seems that process and crust are more contentious I’ll talk about those two…
We had “heard” that their crust can be rather soft, so we asked for our pizza to be cooked slightly longer and they immediately knew what we were referring to and all three pizzas came out very similar and the crusts were perfectly done. The flavor, texture, and look of the crust/dough was similar to a thin naan, almost the flavor of a chapati, they even had black char marks on the bottom, which offered excellent flavor too! Their red sauce is solid and very tasty. The assembly was great! One issue with a lot of places is they don’t assemble the pizza (sauce and toppings) properly, thus there are huge portions of unflavored/unsauced crust, but not any of the 3 we got today, they were all perfectly symmetrical and that extended to the experience of enjoying great bites of flavor.
Overall, this wasn’t the best pizza I’ve ever had, far from it… but it was really good and I can see why some people say this chain is one of the best. I still prefer Ciao in Centreville over this one and even Orofino in Fredericksburg is slightly better than what I had today. But overall, for a true Italian, chef-inspired pizza, Stracci in Del Ray is by far the best! And for the absolute best in NY style, that would be Teddy’s in Middleburg, with Andy’s being a close second.
If you are looking for great pizza its definitely worth a visit! If you are looking for atmosphere, get takeout.
Overall, I would say it is well worth the visit. If nothing else, the pizza is worth a visit, and we will surely be going back. Delicious…
Since its opening, this place has been buzzing with new and repeat visitors and soon-to-be loyal patrons. The kitchen is packed with staff preparing the dough proposed by the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana to perfection.
The pizzas, when served, were fresh out of the oven. Each slice is soft, elastic, tender, and fragrant. You can’t go wrong with the toppings; they are all delicious.
Yes, though this place is busy on the weekends, the staff is attentive and will get you seated.
