Infant Indian food eater here: so if your looking for information regarding authenticity or anything like that, I don’t have it.

BUT- let me tell ya…

This food was so good! We came at lunchtime and just chose one of the combos and ate what was on the bar. Of the items that were on the bar, they had two mild items which were the lamb (Rogan Josh) and the chicken tikka masala. And then they did have a spicy chicken curry. And another medium option that I forgot what it was.

They also had some vegetable options.

The combo with two protein choices, rice, a naan and a cheese ball (not sure what the actual name is) and a drink run you about $20 a pop.

When I walked in, I was really excited because again I’m a babe when it comes to Indian experiences. I also can’t handle digestive wise on the exit a lot of heat, so was pleased to find that the options available were considerate of that.

The lady behind the counter was helpful and directing me to which combo I could choose, their accents were thick, so it was a special interaction that I personally really enjoy to fumble through the conversation. When it comes to the naan you can have the garlic or plain, my husband and I choose one and the other so we could share. Both were good, soft and freshly toasted (I like the brown parts personally ).

The dining room is quaint, but there is plenty of seating. Additionally, there is an outdoor patio for seating.

Some cultural music in the background playing at a low tone (not too loud or disturbing at all) so the atmosphere was set for you and whoever you want to have conversation and to enjoy one another. There’s a TV in the dining room, but it wasn’t on.

All of the ladies working there, it seemed related and they would work behind the counter and then come out and sit in the dining room and talk with each other and that was nice. I enjoyed their candor. Definitely mom and Pop vibe and so enjoyable.

Lastly, the cheese balls: I’ve never had this and wasn’t exactly sure what it was. The lady did tell me the name of it and then just explained to me that it was cheese, but it was sweet. My husband did a good job describing it as the Cinnabon donut holes from Taco Bell? That’s the way they looked not the way they tasted. Whatever it was, it was dense like cake and soaked in some sort of syrupy sweetness. And I loved it.

Wonder food. Chicken dishes were excellent and filled with flavor. The garlic Naan was lights out! Could be the best I’ve had. Staff was pleasant and counter service was fast. Love this place!

Great food! Not a fan of eating off paper plates though. The rice pudding was delicious. We had the chicken tikka masala and it was so flavorful and the naan was warm and crispy. Would come again.

I wanted to like this restaurant and support it, and I think it’s a nice homey atmosphere, but some of the dishes left some to be desired. I don’t know if it was just an off day, but the tikka masala tasted so off and very salty. I struggled to eat it. I didn’t really like the mango lassi either. Paneer dish was alright. The naan was good though!

During our recent visit, we had dinner at Punjabi Tandoor and ordered dal makhani, paneer, and naan. Unfortunately, the food had no flavor—the dal makhani was completely bland, and the paneer didn’t seem fresh. When we raised this with the staff, they mentioned it was a vegan dal makhani, which was surprising given that it’s not a vegetarian restaurant. Overall, the experience was disappointing, and even the washrooms were not clean. If you don’t have any other option for Indian food, you might consider trying it, but the quality was similar across their other outlets as well.

Looking for authentic home cooked punjabi food, this is the best place. Family owned and passionate about their cooking. Owner Mr. Jagadish Singh, a polite but very knowledgeable ( world traveller) will treat you as he treats his family.

I had the unfortunate experience of dining at Punjabi Tandoor on Activity Road in San Diego, and I have to say it was an absolute disappointment. The poor quality of food served here left a lasting negative impression.

Firstly, the samosa I ordered was nothing short of a disaster. The outer crust was incredibly dry and the filling tasted as if it had been sitting out for days. It had a strange, unpleasant smell that made it impossible to even take a second bite.

Next, I decided to give their carrot halwa a try, hoping for something better. However, it was an absolute letdown. The halwa was overly sweet, mushy, and had a distinct taste of stale carrots. I couldn’t finish more than a couple of spoonfuls before giving up.

Thinking that maybe the main course would redeem my experience, I ordered the chole bhature. Unfortunately, it was yet another disappointment. The chickpeas were undercooked and lacked any flavor, while the bhature was greasy and heavy. It was evident that no effort was put into making this dish appetizing or enjoyable.

Even their tea, which is usually a saving grace at some places, was a complete letdown. It tasted like it had been brewed with stale tea leaves and had a weird aftertaste that lingered unpleasantly.

To make matters worse, the overall ambiance and cleanliness of the restaurant were subpar. The tables were sticky, and the place felt dirty and dingy. It was definitely not a pleasant environment to enjoy a meal in.

All in all, I cannot recommend Punjabi Tandoor on Activity Road in San Diego. The poor quality, stale food, bad taste, and strange smells made it a regrettable dining experience. Save your taste buds and money, and avoid this place at all costs.

The food felt homemade, and you could actually taste different spices in the curry without one overpowering the other. Good place and good value.

Punjabi Tandoor has been my favorite Indian restaurant ever since I came to San Diego for college in 2010. I graduated 2014 and moved out of SD, but since then, every single time I’ve come back it has never failed me. I just had a dinner combo tonight because I’m visiting SD for Labor Day weekend and I almost cried from how delicious it still is!! The women working there are also so friendly and sweet. Thank you Punjabi Tandoor for making me so happy for the past 15 years!
