Unfortunately , we were seated at the bar since we didn’t have a reservation which was fine. The Big turn off came when the hostess while in the middle of eating asked us to move over a chair to sit other guests which was very unpleasant and rude. I mean, there were other sits available behind us and the place wasn’t crowded instead of cramping us up.
We also were charged a gratuity fee for 2 at the bar which is normally reserved for large parties at a table.
In the span of less than a week, I visited Prime 39 twice and spent over $400 for two people. Here’s what happened:
Visit 1 – Friday, February 27th:
I ordered my usual favorite, the crab claws, and was immediately let down. The portion has noticeably shrunk while the prices have stayed the same (if not gone up). I also noticed no bread came with the dish, which has always been included in the past. When I asked our server, she responded with an attitude saying “do you want bread?” and when the bill came, I was charged $4 for four small slices. Small thing, but it set the tone.
Visit 2 – Thursday, March 5th, The Bigger Mistake:
We were not greeted by a single person upon arrival. We made our way to the bar, waited 10 minutes with no acknowledgment, and had to ask for menus ourselves. The bartender, Juan, was clearly doing his best but he was single-handedly managing drinks for the entire restaurant, which is a management failure, not his.
After 25 minutes, we ordered. I ordered the mussels and lamb chops (both appetizers), and my mother ordered the lamb chop entrée. Our bartender confirmed everything would come out together. We waited an hour and a half for our food while a table seated after us received their meals first.
I called the manager over (a woman with a buzz cut). No greeting. No apology. When I calmly asked what was taking so long, she made us feel like we were the inconvenience, walked away to check, and came back 15 minutes later with only my mussels, still no apology, while my mother’s entrée and my lamb chops were nowhere in sight. I asked to have the mussels taken back and brought out with everything else. When the food finally arrived, it wasn’t bad but it was absolutely not worth the wait or the experience getting there.
What really sealed it was that the manager comped drinks for two other women nearby who were also inconvenienced but offered us nothing. Not a comp. Not an apology. Not even a word. As we left, my mother and I both said goodbye and thank you to the manager and a server standing at the door. Complete silence. Not a single response.
Here’s what gets me: Prime 39 automatically adds a 20% gratuity to EVERY bill. If you’re going to mandate a 20% gratuity, the service needs to match it. It didn’t come close.
The portions are shrinking. The prices aren’t. The service from management on down was dismissive, rude, and frankly embarrassing for an establishment of this price point. There are better restaurants on the Island that will actually make you feel welcomed and valued. Please think twice before spending your hard-earned money here.
