Potomac Chocolate was the first craft bean-to-bar chocolate maker in the Washington, DC area. In our absurdly small chocolate factory, we handcraft single-origin dark chocolate bars, milk chocolate, drinking chocolates, bonbons (truffles), and more. All of our cacao (cocao beans) are ethically sourced with a focus on supporting cacao growers, organic production, and fine flavor. Our chocolate is all soy free. Most of our chocolate is also dairy, nut, and gluten free, and vegan. Stop in for some of the best chocolate you’ve ever had!

Gelato ice cream incredible all made from scratch, chocolate made from cocoa beans, Madagascan vanilla was made from actual vanilla beans , strawberry cheesecake was the G.O.A.T, mint chocolate made from their own garden definitely recommend. Bob was gracious, friendly and very caring. Our family will be back to try other flavors.

Came in on a late Tuesday evening, and the man working was extremely kind. He greeted me when I walked in, and he immediately began to talk about his shop and what he has to offer. You can tell that he is really passionate about his shop and the chocolates they sell. I got the spice chocolate… it was great. It was almost a mix of savory and sweet. I’m going to have to try and find something to pair it with.

Great experience overall!

My wife and I took a stroll in downtown Occoquan last week, and we (very fortunately) stumbled upon Potomac Chocolate. Over the last year or so, I’ve become fascinated with the history of some of the chocolate empires (e.g., Mars, Hershey), so we had to stop in this chocolate boutique. The entire experience was a 11/10! We talked to the owner, Ben, for about 20 minutes — his passion for making quality (and ethically sourced) chocolate was evident, and he even entertained my musings on those pioneering chocolatiers (+ taught me more!).

And then we get to the chocolate…we were truly blown by the quality and taste! We had Worth Its Salt & Finca Las Veraneras (El Salvador bean… our favorite). I had no qualms with paying $10/bar, and we can’t wait to get back and try more!

If you’re in Occoquan, this is a MUST visit!! Job well done, Ben & team!

Some of the best cacao I have ever tasted!
Overall 10 out of 10
The consistency and flavor are always on point, so rich! Each sip is a luxurious velvety experience. The staff is always friendly and excited to be there. This is one of my must go to when I’m in this area. My heart always feels so full and open after visiting the shop.

Let’s not forget about the unique handcrafted chocolate bars, I love that the Owner makes all of the ingredients that goes inside them

In the heart of Historic Occoquan is an enticing store front. With restored furniture on its front porch and a sign that reads “Named one of the 50 best chocolate shops in the country by Food and Wine magazine,” you can’t help but to walk in. Here’s my experience:

1) Chocolate: For 11 years, Potomac Chocolate has made hand-crafted chocolate just south of Occoquan in Woodbridge, Virginia. The chocolatier’s goal is to make quality bean-to-bar chocolates. They sell 5+ bars for around $9 each. Expect a different kind of bar. They are thinner than expected and come in packaging that looks more like a coffee bean bag. What I appreciate about Potomac Chocolate is they have a good mix of dark and milk chocolate. I bought the “Toasted Milk” bar and it was deliciously creamy!

2) Space: For having such a beautiful front porch, it’s shockingly bare inside. There’s a sterile counter and a wood table with brochures on it.

3) Gelato: I didn’t order any, but it looked good and my friends later told me they love their gelato!

4) Price: $9 seems steep for chocolate, but keep in mind they are hand-crafted and artisanal chocolate. You pay for quality.

To put it bluntly, this place is dangerous. The chocolate is delicious, to the point where: a) you won’t be able to resist having another bite unless you have self-control (which I seem to have been born without); and b) all other chocolate (especially mass-produced, commercial stuff) will be ruined for you going forward. For the best experience, I’d recommend either the cookie butter bonbon (my favorite) or the raspberry bonbon (my fiance’s favorite)!

(Also, the person at the counter was super cool and recognized the band on my hat, so they get bonus points for that!)

Such a cute little chocolate shop!! I should’ve asked for the person’s name behind the counter cause they were so nice!! I loved hearing how they make all the chocolate from the cocoa bean and I found that really interesting!!! I got the chocolate ice cream gelato stuff and it was delicious! You could taste the quality of the chocolate because it had the perfect flavor!! I also got the smallest cup but they topped it off so it was amazing!

Potomac Chocolate is a true treat for any chocolate lover! Their artisanal chocolates are rich, smooth, and bursting with flavor. The selection is impressive, with unique and creative combinations that make each piece feel special. I especially loved their handcrafted truffles—each one was perfectly balanced. Whether you’re grabbing a gift or indulging yourself, this place is a must-visit for anyone who appreciates high-quality, indulgent chocolate.

Just purchased my first bar from a small local shop in Brooklyn. This chocolate bar, the hazelnut one, is now one of the top three chocolate bars I’ve ever tasted in my life. Beautiful flavor. INCREDBLE quality!
