NOTE: This is a hard one. IT’S NOT BAD… it’s just not great.Prices are fairly reasonable for seafood along Hwy 98 Gulf Drive through the small towns. This feels like a local spot to get seafood without the frills or high prices of the other tourist-oriented places.
️ FOOD:
The lunch special (about $15) was flounder with two sides — baked beans and coleslaw (not our choice). The flounder was served in small strips. I’m not sure if it was locally caught, but it seemed over-breaded and was a bit hard. The hush puppies were definitely overcooked — hard on the outside with a slight stale oil taste. The baked beans tasted straight out of a can with no doctoring up. The coleslaw was store-bought, not homemade (if it was homemade, they nailed the buffet flavor perfectly). We also ordered gator bites — they were delicious, though a bit small for $15. They came with honey and were tasty regardless of price.
Drinks are $3… and water is good (unusual in small towns).
ATMOSPHERE:
Definitely a unpretentious eatery, It’s a casual, no‑frills local spot that feels homey and comfortable — the kind of place regulars stop by for familiar food and friendly service. Inside was clean, with some pleasant wall decorations and photos.Concrete floors, white plastic-top tables (just like our church tables), cutlery wasca single fork wrapped in a paper napkins the chairs were comfortable.
Due to sparseness, it was a bit loud.
Menu is a one piece printed page that laminated.
The food was served on a classic divided plate (like a school tray), with coleslaw in a styrofoam bowl.
The appetizer came in a plastic basket with small styrofoam saucers.
Overall, it’s an unpretentious, inexpensive local place.
SERVICE:
Service was fantastic! From the moment we walked in — smiling faces, quick seating, quick ordering, and fast service. The staff were friendly, checked on us often, and refilled drinks without asking.
✳️SUMMARY:
➡️ Let me reiterate — this is not a bad place. If you want seafood at a reasonable price, it’s worth a stop. It’s not fancy, but it feels homey and relaxed.
My ⭐️⭐️⭐️½ rating — Above Average for this type if establishment.
Not bad, just not great.
Would I stop here again? Yes.
Would I order the fried catfish next time? Definitely.
Would I get the gator bites again? No.
The service ware has taken a beating and needs to be replaced. Their standard plastic cups are showing so much wear as in chips around the edge of the cups.
Also, for goodness sakes, if you run out of captain wafers, put them on the side of the serving plate beside the salad bowl. Giving out a plastic snack bag with four crackers is absurd and is an insult to patrons.
The quality of the food has gone down also. Every bite tasted of old oil whether it was fried or grilled. A simple remedy is the fryer needs to be deep cleaned, not just replacing the oil. The griddle needs to be cleaned also to remove old residue.
The thing that is the worst, is the added chopped parsley and onion to every seafood plate to make the plate look more upscale. Trust me, it does nothing for presentation, looks stupid, and does nothing on the palate.
The wait staff is barely doing the obvious in service. No smiles. No happy banter. Just sad and I would say overworked, but that would be an overstatement. Even suggesting a tip rate of 20% is an insult to people who are being forced to tip an outrageous amount for poor service. What happened to tipping according to the waitstaff performance? My favorite job was serving at a restaurant that took pride in their restaurant and in their offerings of food, service, and atmosphere.
If Posey’s is giving up, please do it in a prideful manner, and just close. Or, pick up the torch and do better. A year ago, the food was really good and we frequented every two weeks. Now, we dine at Posey’s mainly because someone requests and we go out of respect for their reminiscing of the good old days. Now it is just sad. The restaurant, in the past, has been so much more than a greasy spoon.
Please take my thoughts as an encouragment to do better. It has not gotten totally out of hand. You can turn it around before it is too late.
