Review of Portofino’s Italian Restaurant in Des Moines – Facebook

My wife had the sausage salciccia which was served with spaghetti. Both were amazing. Nothing frozen here like that chain Italian place in town.

The remodel of this restaurant is very well done. As locals to this area, we really want this restaurant to succeed, so please take our criticisms as constructive.

Overall, the dishes tasted rushed for the following reasons:

1. Linguini Alla Cabonara: The garlic in the carbonara wasn’t cooked long enough and tasted raw. 3/5

2. The steamers: In this dish, the wine wasn’t cooked out of the sauce. It tasted bitter like wine. 2/5

3. Spaghetti and Meatballs: The spaghetti sauce wasn’t reduced enough, so it was watery (see picture). The meatball itself was nice and tender! 4/5

4. Formaggio Fritto: The formaggio was cold in the center. The cheese was somewhat hardened instead of being nicely melted when you cut open.3/5
Uh
5. Gamberoni Fiorentini: the prawn was nice and tender, but overall the dish was not that memorable. It needs a kick of heat and spice. I’m not sure how I feel about eating half raw spinach and cooked spinach together. The tomatoes feel like they didn’t belong to the dish. 3/5

The cheesecake dessert is super delicious though! They gave you like 10 options for desserts on a tray which is such a nice treat at the end!

Had care been taken on these dishes, we think they would have been excellent. Please consider our feedback so we and others look forward to coming here and enjoying well made food.

We look forward to improvements here and will return to see how the restaurant progresses!

Not a bad start!

Reservation highly recommended~

Emi, the bartender was so wonderful to be able to make drinks, and help me decide on a manic course for my solo Valentine’s date with myself. I was a no rez walk in and the staff was very very attentive. I’ll be back soon!

The bread was HEAVENLY

This very much matches the vibe of Spinasse downtown without the cost, also a bit different on flavor due to Spinasse focuses on a certain region of italy.

10 stars if I can give them that!!!

PortoVino Ristorante is truly a gem! The atmosphere is warm and inviting, and the owner treats every guest with incredible kindness and attention — you can really feel the passion behind everything they do.

The menu is absolutely perfect — every dish is authentic, flavorful, and beautifully presented. Their wine selection is also outstanding, carefully chosen to complement each meal.

It’s not just a restaurant, it’s an experience you’ll want to repeat again and again. Highly recommended!

So glad we finally tried PortoVino! We were welcomed in, seated quickly, and were greeted with excellent service and had a wonderful evening! Once we heard the specials we knew they were a must try, the ribeye and lobster ravioli were both delicious! Excited to return to try more off the menu

PortoVino feels like a hidden upscale speakeasy, with a full enticing menu. Low glowing moody lights, delicious pasta and wine, along with great music. The night I attended, I comfortably read a book over dinner at the bar solo, there were couples, families and a group celebrating a birthday. It’s open, yet cozy and warm. Great hidden Des Moines gem, just a short walk away from the waterfront. Extra plus, the staff are lovely and knowledgeable people.

I wanted to share a recommendation for an Italian restaurant that I believe is a must-visit. If you haven’t been yet, I highly recommend checking it out. You might find yourself rethinking other Italian dining experiences.

Our experience over the last six months has been consistently excellent, both in terms of food quality and service. There’s ample street parking available in front of and around the restaurant, and the interior offers a very nice and cozy atmosphere.

We had a wonderful dining experience at PortoVino Ristorante Italiano. We ordered the lamb chops and the halibut, and both dishes were outstanding. The lamb chops were tender, perfectly seasoned, and cooked just right. The halibut was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared.

The quality of the food, combined with the warm atmosphere and attentive service, made for a very enjoyable meal. A great spot for a relaxed yet refined Italian dining experience. Highly recommended.

We visited Porto Vino based on strong reviews, hoping to find a good spot for business dinners. The atmosphere and service were excellent (5 stars each), but the food was just okay (3 stars). When our server asked how things were, I said exactly that: “the service is great, the ambience is great, the food is eh, ok.”
Within minutes, someone—who never identified themselves as manager, chef, or owner—approached our table with a confrontational tone. He defensively pointed out that we’d “eaten it all” (I hadn’t eaten since 9am and wasn’t going to waste food I intended to pay for). When I tried offering constructive feedback, he became increasingly combative and insisted on giving us a discount we didn’t want. When we declined and said we were just sharing our thoughts, he asked us to leave.
My companion started recording the interaction, accidentally knocked over a glass, left $100 for his portion, and we exited. This person apologized to another table as we left—but never to us.
I’ve never experienced such an aggressive response to mild criticism. A simple “thank you for the feedback” would have sufficed. Instead, what could have been a 4-star review became a one-star experience. We won’t be returning to Porto Vino or their sister restaurant, Sansonina.
