Unfortunately, the food feels more like a “churn and burn” operation than an authentic Italian kitchen. The pasta lacked the bite and was a standard boxed variety that had been cooked well past al dente. No fresh pasta was available. Even the appetizers struggled and the sauces lacked any real depth of flavor.
While it’s clearly a local favorite & been around for a while, it’s disappointing to settle for boxed quality that you can make much better at home. If you’re looking for a quick, filling meal with good service, this fits the bill but if you’re looking for authentic Italian flavors and handmade textures, you might find it as underwhelming as I did. I wish them the best but I will sadly not be returning.
The restaurant has a great atmosphere with ample seating and a great outdoor area. They have a full-service bar, but I can’t say much for the Old Fashion I had. Just not up to par. They had a good section of beer, but no cider. There is ample free parking. The service was great and I will dine here again the next time I’m in Charlotte.
Tonight, I placed a DoorDash order for Chicken Parmesan. DoorDash does not provide an option to substitute marinara with Alfredo, which is already an issue, but I tried to handle it responsibly. Immediately after placing the order, before the entrée could reasonably have been prepared,.. I called the restaurant to request a simple substitution: replace marinara with Alfredo sauce.
What followed over the next 25 minutes was complete operational chaos.
I made six phone calls. I was hung up on multiple times, placed on hold and disconnected, and ultimately transferred to someone who identified themselves as a manager (this guy should be fired)… only to be put on hold again and intentionally disconnected. On my final call, I was told flatly that they “could not make the change” and that I would need to contact the DoorDash driver instead. The driver, understandably confused had no clue what was going on when contacted.
Here’s the most baffling part:
I offered to pay extra, up to $10 directly, to simply have Alfredo added to the order. That was also refused.
For context, this is not the first time this exact issue has happened. On a prior occasion, I personally placed the same order, called it in, drove to the restaurant to pick it up, and still received it incorrectly, with marinara instead of Alfredo!
At no point was there an attempt to solve the problem. No escalation. No accountability. Just repeated hang-ups and a final “sorry, nothing we can do,” followed by another disconnect.
This is not a kitchen issue, it’s a management and systems failure. Substituting one sauce for another is a basic, low cost adjustment. The refusal to handle it, combined with hanging up on a customer repeatedly is indefensible.
As a former restaurant owner, I understand operational pressure, food cost, and delivery platform limitations. That’s exactly why this experience is so unacceptable. This wasn’t about being busy, it was about poor leadership, poor training, and zero customer care. Absolutely zero!
I would never recommend Portofino’s on Park Road, and frankly, this experience makes me question the franchise as a whole. We’ll be finding our Italian elsewhere, at a restaurant that values customer service, basic competence, and respect.
This may be the first negative restaurant review I’ve ever written, but after being hung up on repeatedly over a simple sauce substitution, it felt necessary.
1/10. Across the board.
