Fries? I love fries and theirs is very good. I’m neutral to crinkle cut fries but still 4.5 star. I tried their chocolate cake and that’s a 4 star. It’s too sweet bc it fits American taste buds. Soft and moist, though. The strawberry short cake? 4 star for me but one buddy liked it a lot bc of the whip cream and real strawberries. He called it “dangerous.”
Overall, for this price point of fast food, I’ll give it a 5 star. $10 burger combo is solid in today’s 2025 marker.
• Italian beef is flavorful and well seasoned
• Hot dogs come out fast and loaded correctly
• Chocolate cake shake lives up to the hype
• Portions justify the price in the 10 to 20 dollar range
Service moves quickly even when it’s busy. The dining area stays clean and organized. Parking is easy at this location.
It loses one star for consistency during peak hours. Food quality can dip slightly when the line gets long.
If you want reliable comfort food with bold flavors, this spot gets the job done. You will leave full and satisfied.
After a failed roller blade side quest, I regrouped at Portillo’s, a Gym I remembered fondly from past Chicago runs and its DFW debut. I went with the Beef & Char-Grilled Italian Sausage Sandwich, fries with Comeback Sauce, and the Chocolate Covered Strawberry Shake, a full offensive lineup for an empty stomach. The beef sandwich landed like a super-effective move, though next time I’m definitely powering it up with gravy for max damage. The fries were perfectly salted, and the shake was sweet enough to feel like a rare candy reward. The Comeback sauce left me wondering its purpose. It didn’t enhance my meal experience but it didn’t hurt it. Almost like the sauce used Splash to no effect. Minor debris on the table aside, this place stays busy for a reason with strong flavor stats, solid quality, and worth the slightly higher dollar investment.
The first few times I went, it was jam-packed with customers. Although the ordering line moves pretty quickly, the pick-up at the counter system is a mess. You’re supposed to wait nearby waiting for your number to be called, but you can barely hear the number over the speaker while the numbers on the TV are really small. I counted around 30-40 people crowding around the pick-up area last time I went. Perhaps a blinking coaster system would be a better alternative.
The water refill situation is also a bit of a hassle. They give you a tiny dentist-sized cup of water, and if you want a refill you have to ask someone at the pick-up counter, who is most likely already swamped with getting people’s orders out.
Update (August 2025): I’m happy to say Portillo’s has addressed these issues. They’ve added order kiosks at the entrance, QR code ordering from tables, and a much smoother pickup system. Best of all, they now have a self-serve drink station, making refills easy. It’s great to see a popular spot improve the overall customer experience.
Overall, the food does taste good, but I’ll probably just go to Sonic next time.
It wasn’t very busy on a Sunday evening which was nice. You order from a kiosk at the entrance and they call your number when it is ready. My order was ready very quickly less than 5 minutes. Prices are reasonable for the quality of the food. I will definitely be back to try the Chicago-style hot dogs next.
The food however did not hold up because they gave me a rather bad aftertaste later in the afternoon. Which is never good.
Folks, if you want to eat in The Grandscape, go eat somewhere else. Especially after they build the trash can of fast food called White Castle which is one of the dumbest decision Texas has made. You’ve got better choices than White Castle & This.
