Quite bad that a restaurant that is fairly positively reviewed didn’t give us an equally positive experience. This was more because of how our party was treated. We made a dinner reservation and when we arrived (we were so much on time), there wasn’t a table waiting for us, we had to wait another 20 minutes at least (it was a full Friday night). The servers weren’t apologetic at all and they were inconsistent with telling is which table was going to be for us. We had the feeling they didn’t really care about our presence.
About the food – I could only praise the smoked salmon salad (so good!). The truffle risotto was good but I have tasted good truffle risotto in other places, theirs was nothing too memorable, considering this is a highly rated restaurant. The linguine de mare – it was okay, it was too creamy and I got easily tired of it after a while.
The restaurant, while having quaint architecture, feels quite cramped. What more with a full house of people. So yeah, not our best Carmel-by-the-Sea restaurant experience for sure.

What a delightful restaurant. We had reservations and were greeted warmly from the get go. The restaurant has a cozy and pleasant vibe. The food is so good, as the wine choices. The staff are helpful and knowledgeable. We definitely will come again when in Carmel.

This restaurant is ridiculously cute, and the single dog friendliest I’ve visited. They have a dedicated dog menu, ranging from burger patties to filet mignon (which wasn’t even on the human lunch menu). The service was impeccable, food was delicious, and the vibes and space are just beautiful. What a lovely Carmel lunch spot! We will absolutely return with friends and pup.

It is ones if the best reviewed restaurants in town, and there are good reasons for it. The building is charming, like a small house on the Tuscany country side.
Italian food is known for its simplicity and bold flavors, you will find exactly that here. There is nothing fancy about their preparations, but the flavor combination was divine, tender meats and perfectly cooked pasta, transitional Italian at its best. If they could tune down the saltines a bit, it would be perfect.

Portabella Restaurant absolutely blew us away. The food was amazing!! Hands down one of the best dining experiences we’ve had. The mushroom soup deserves a special shoutout… rich, flavorful, and honestly unforgettable.
What made the night even more special was the live serenading of customers. Such a beautiful touch that created a warm, memorable atmosphere you don’t find everywhere.
Our server was fantastic—friendly, attentive, and genuinely made sure we were well taken care of from start to finish. Exceptional service all around.

The food is very salty. The waiter was not friendly. After the food was served, many flies were flying around the table. There no waiter asked the food was okay or not. The waiters talk so loud and laugh, they don’t care customers. Why so many recommendation for this restaurant?All I can say is that my experience was really really bad!

We stopped at Portabella in Carmel during our California road trip, and it turned out to be one of the most memorable meals of the journey. The cozy charm of the restaurant, combined with top-notch service and truly exceptional food, made for a fantastic experience.
We ordered a variety of dishes to share and each one was outstanding:
The seared scallops were perfectly caramelized on the outside, tender inside, and paired beautifully with a creamy risotto studded with sweet peas. The grilled lemon on the side was a great touch and elevated the whole plate.
The risotto itself could have been a meal on its own—creamy, rich, and full of flavor.
The portobello mushroom pasta was pure comfort food—earthy mushrooms, tender pasta ribbons, and a velvety cream sauce.
And not to forget the beet salad—fresh, colorful, and refreshing, with vibrant citrus and creamy goat cheese adding a lovely balance.
Everything was plated beautifully and cooked to perfection. We also appreciated the warm, welcoming service from the staff, who made us feel right at home.
If you’re in Carmel or passing through, Portabella is an absolute must-visit. We’ll definitely be back!

Amazing little spot in the heart of Carmel by the Sea! Called up ahead and they were able to get us a spot within minutes . Food was authentic and really gave me a homemade feeling with original detail and quality. Great spot for late night pasta
