1 Star — Because Google still refuses to offer negative numbers

We walked into POROTTAS / The Grand Indian Cuisine (9600 Fairway Dr) expecting to bite, chew, savor, and swallow some delicious food…
Instead, we ended up swallowing frustration, disbelief, and a whole lot of pride. Basically everything except food.

At the 35‑minute mark, when I asked about the delay, the main host/server immediately tried to throw another staff member under the bus — “Oh, they must’ve forgotten your order.”
Adorable. Except at the 55‑minute mark, when I reminded him again, I also reminded the gentleman with snakes tattooed all over his right forearm that he was the one who took our order. Not the poor person he tried to blame.

And right on cue — as if the universe wanted comedic timing — the kitchen finally walked out with our food. An hour later. My kids were basically turning into pumpkins.

So I made a sarcastic comment: “Oh wow, finally — we were about to leave.”
And this man, without an ounce of apology, goes:

“I can cancel the rest of your dinner order if you want.”

Oh, we wanted.
We gladly did.

We finished the appetizers (which only arrived after the first complaint), and THANKS TO THE STAFF AT The Curry Leaves (6502 Lonetree Blvd) whom I called while kids finished their appetizers and salvaged the night like responsible parents who refuse to let hunger win with an order of 2 YUMMY MASALA DOSAS, which we craved the whole evening 🙂

I will definitely miss getting the call alerts from the POROTTAS staff and making the trip to the restaurant whenever oldmonk beer became available!!
But hey — pride is expensive, I guess.

So thank you, POROTTAS, for all the yummy meals over the years. Truly.
But after this experience? My family won’t be coming back.

Because my pride is a bitter pill to swallow — and unfortunately, it was the only thing served on time

The food is great. Tried thalapakatti mutton briyani it was good. But dosa and chutneys are not up to the mark. Pomfret fish is OK mutton ghost slightly sweeter may be ee requeated for medium spice. Porotta is good.

Note:THEY HAVE ROBOTS SERVING TO TABLES. I AM SURE KIDS WILL ENJOY..

Really lovely people work there. We go to alot of indian restaurants and they are one of the restaurants those got good staff. They are friendly, attentive, and always willing to assist. We have visited a couple times. The meal options are excellent. Both north and south Indian alternatives are available. Every time we visit, we are satisfied with the staff’s service and food. This time, we had masala dosa and lacha pratha, both of which were superbly prepared. There, I had a wonderful experience.

They are my favorite Indian restaurant in the Sacramento area. I’ve been to India five times and cook chettinad cuisine at home, so I’m willing to argue my position. Great combination of presentation and flavor, making is worthwhile for a special occasion, but laid back atmosphere for just a general desire to go to a restaurant. My favorite is the mutton soup. For newbies, get a masala dosa. If they post they are doing a thali on the weekend, you might even meet me it is my single most favorite thing in this world.

The food was so delicious and the menu clearly marked what the vegan options were. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable.

We went in here not realizing that it was a vegetarian place, but still The wait was considerable for our food, but that’s expected from a smaller establishment where food is cooked to order. We ordered way too much, starting with the Samosas first, the cheese Dosa(like a crepe), Porotta (pan fried, flaky, pull apart type bread), Veg Spring Dosa(spring roll, but it was soggy), Paneer 65(fried cheese), and the Thalapakatti Biriyani. Everything was hot and fresh, well seasoned, and we didnt miss the meat! Although we ate more carbs than we should’ve. We were served a variety of chutneys to accompany the food, mint, coconut, and tomato. My favorites were the samosas and the porotta. It had a lunchroom feel and was small inside, but cozy. We were given tablets to order which seemed like a good idea but the food had no descriptions which made it difficult if you arent familiar with the dishes.

Being an Indian, I am very particular about my food, and this place was strictly okay. We dine at a very low crowded time, so I was expecting better food. However, the Vadas we ordered was slightly undercooked and Dosa weren’t that great. They do have very good Madras filter coffee though.
They have outdoor seating, so our dog could sit next to us while we dined.

I was disappointed to see that I ordered Mysore masala dosa for takeout, and received paneer masala something dosa.

Food was just fine but I had to toss most of it as it was too bland for me.

Discovered this place while searching for new Indian restaurants to try out in the area. They offer a mix of North Indian and south Indian fare but the focus is on Malabar/Chettinad style cuisine.
What we ordered: Chilli Paneer, Paneer Butter masala, Veg Jalfrezi, Garlic naan, butter naan, tandoori roti, buttermilk and filter coffee.

The food was delicious and the Filter coffee was amazing!! But the best part of our experience was talking to Stalin!! Such a gentleman! Loved talking to him about the food there and how he started the restaurant. He even made sure to get me an extra coffee to-go when I mentioned how great their filter coffee was.

Definitely recommend this place and we look forward to going back and trying out the Porottas and other south Indian fare next.
