Poor Boys

Social Profile:

So the legend goes, in 1920’s New Orleans, the Martin Brothers gave free food to striking tram workers, serving meat and seafood scraps on french loaves. As they flocked to the the Martin Brother’s deli in their droves, the striking tram workers became know as Poor Boys or Po’Boys, with the iconic sandwiches served to them adopting the same name. Here at Poor Boys, we are a local independent restaurant started by two brothers who were inspired by the city of New Orleans, with the amazing atmosphere, culture and food – whose aim was to provide the great Southern Louisiana hospitality in a vibrant and friendly atmosphere.

Small & unfussy quick-serve eatery offering New Orlean po’ boys sandwiches & dessert.

We had the fried chicken Poor Boy, the Beef Brisket Poor boy and the jalapeno poppers. Can confidently say the Jalapeno poppers were smashing and one of the best I’ve had! The Fried Chicken Poor Boy was definitely good and lived up to the hype so I would recommend that too. What I unfortunately cannot recommend was the brisket poor boy, as the meat was cold and lacked flavour, and due to the huge chunks of it, quite hard to eat due to the texture.

The place is certainly very popular so expect at the very least 10 mins wait time around a standard meal time, and they only take walk-ins, no reservations. We got a table fairly quick despite the lines as we opted for the empty outside tables, which really wasn’t the arctic as they do have outdoor heaters so if you don’t mind braving a little cold, and would fancy a shorter wait time then an outside table is the way to go. The staff were very friendly and attentive, and the food was also done fairly quickly.

I would be happy to be back 🙂

The food choice here was exceptional!! Love a good southern USA comfort meal. Everyone tried different food and it was all delicious. The hot honey sauce over fried chicken was scrumptious. The frozen Fanta is a bit overpriced for what it is. Staff was lovely, just know there is a 12.5% optional service charge they add on to the bill (you can ask to remove it but it’s like tipping).

We had an amazing experience at Poor Boys Kingston! The food was incredible and the service was exceptional! Renz not only made us feel welcome but made us feel like we were old friends. His service was very attentive and full of genuine care, making sure we had everything we needed and that we were enjoying the food. Despite the restaurant being busy, this didn’t impact the quality of service or the speed that our food was delivered. We highly recommend Poor Boys. Thank you Renz!

Walked in only to be told nicely by the bartender that no tables were immediately available but we could wait in que outside. I shook my head yes as we r starving and the food smells amazing. We walk back outside to a line halfway down the block. We waited about 45 mins with the people behind us talking about how good it was. Granted it is Monday. Someone came out AMA said they were running low on chicken and wanted to announce in case there was none by the ti e we got in. I noticed none left. We get in only to have the very best service, and the best food I have had in a long time. United Stares or otherwise!!! The soft shell crab!? The brisket could be cut with a fork. The mac& cheese I was skeptical about the onions but it was seaso rd and very good as well! The shrimp fresh, and the chicken breaded and seasoned to perfection. Idk who these poor boys are, but they won’t be poor for long!!! Definitely worth the wait. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Yes we traveled from the US and would do it again!!!!! Such a relief as we just left Paris and the food was horrible!!!!

One of our favourite spots in Kingston for the best mac & cheese. The staff are always friendly and the food is incredible. The restaurant itself is a little on the small side and can feel slightly crammed, but it’s definitely worth it for the quality.

Have been wanting to go since this place opened. Headed there early on a Saturday to avoid queues. The restaurant was packed by 12.15!
Food was excellent. Ordered the full chicken special. We nearly fell off our chairs when this massive plate of chicken arrived. Some of the best fried chicken I’ve had in London. So much more to explore on that menu. I will be back!

We visited on a weekday lunchtime and was very busy, so recommend to book.
Staff are very friendly and really helpful as we ordered online and sat outside under the canopies which have good heaters. It’s quite cramped inside for wheelchair users.
Food was fantastic, we had both the chicken and shrimp po boys, and were amazing. Chicken tenders are amazing and a great portion size.
Would also recommend the ‘angry’ loaded fries if you like a bit of spice.
Highly recommend.

Me and my family were there today to eat dinner. We came all the way from Norway just to visit this place because my mother found them on TikTok. The food was delicious, and the staff were really nice and friendly. The only thing we did not like was that the music was really loud, so we needed to shout to each other, and I know we ordered a lot of food, but we did not receive two of the items we ordered. We told them we were missing an item, and they brought it to us and told us it was on the house. And when we got the receipt, we saw that we were missing another item, so they took that one off the bill as well. And we also got that final item for free when we were leaving. Overall it was a nice experience, and I definitely recommend this place

Just had an excellent lunch here, first time visiting, made to feel very welcome and had the menu explained super clearly by Muddasser. Ordered 2x po boys, a southern and shrimp, my southern with Louisiana sauce was amazing, shrimp also very good. Mac and cheese also very good. Unless you have a very big appetite you don’t really need sides but it’s all good to take home. Will definitely return next time I’m in Kingston. Arrived at 12.05 just after opening and it was 80% full so would recommend early arrival if you don’t want to queue outside.

This was my second time going to Poor Boys and the quality remains consistent. It is probably the best fried chicken I have ever had.

I ordered the southern chicken and have had it with mac and cheese today, and previously as a sandwich. This mac and cheese is one of the few that genuinely taste rlly good without being overloaded with cheese making me feel sick. The chicken is flavoured well and is never dry.

Although a bit pricey, but not crazy, you will almost always have leftovers to last another meal so basically paying 2 for 1 in terms of meals for the day.

The service is quick once sat, but be warned if you go during peak hours expect there to be a queue.

Only downside was this time we went we wanted to try the Twinkies however they had ran out

Overall definitely worth visiting, and if chicken isn’t your thing they have beef and fish too.

Edit: have returned again, Twinkies are no longer on the menu!!! However did try the beef brisket donuts which were delicious. My friend ordered the chilli cheese dippers and you get so many of them too!!
