A down-to-earth, no-frills Chinese eatery that does the basics really well. If you’re in the area, it’s definitely worth giving this place a try.
Walking in feels like a nostalgic hug. It retains that classic, unpretentious charm, backed by impeccable service. The staff are genuinely welcoming, managing the floor with a warmth that makes you feel like a regular from your very first visit.
The menu strikes a perfect balance, offering everything from familiar Western-style favorites to refined, traditional Cantonese dishes. Perhaps the best part is the affordable pricing; they have kept the prices remarkably grounded, offering generous portions that make it an easy choice for a regular midweek meal.
It’s rare to find a place that works just as well for a quick Tuesday takeaway as it does for a sit-down family feast. Reliable, soulful, and great value!
Our go-to dishes: Sesame prawn toasts to start with, and the steak in garlic sauce, honey chicken and veg fried rice to end on.
What you get and what to expect:
Down to earth, authentic Aussie-style Chinese food in a place that doesn’t try to be pretentious, and just as I remember it growing up as a kid in the 90s. The staff and the owners are lovely, and we find many of the patrons – usually in large groups, appear to be loyal Poon regulars, judging by the friendly banter with the owners. It’s very family-friendly and very reasonably priced.
The decor is simple yet warm, and their staff are attentive. You can even expect a hot refresher towel served to you upon conclusion of the evening’s festivities.
The dishes are simple, classic and hit the mark commensurate with the price.
What you don’t get and shouldn’t expect:
Overpriced Chinese food in a serene dining atmosphere, or a higher-end culinary experience. Various sauces available on the table (on request).
If you haven’t been yet, give it a shot. It’s a hidden gem when you feel the itch of nostalgic Chinese food in the Sunshine area.
It’s also nice to be supporting the local Sunshine community and clearly a hard-working family.
8/10
Recommend the San Choy Bow, Chinese sausage, Chinese greens with oyster sauce.
Will be back!
