We thought to get to the area a little early to have a few drinks before dinner – there is not much around so reconsider this idea! Thankfully we found a restaurant that was happy to serve us wine and cocktails beforehand. So if you’re thinking of doing this pop into Pastoficio around the corner
Recommend Pommidoro
If you’re already nearby and craving a basic pasta, sure, it’ll do. Otherwise, I’d strongly recommend looking elsewhere.
I ordered the fillet strips, expecting actual steak fillet cut into strips. What arrived was closer to a stew and there’s no universe in which that was fillet. The asparagus side was simply not edible. The only decent dish was the plain pasta, but even that was nothing you couldn’t find pretty much anywhere else.
Bottom line: convenient if you’re close, disappointing if you’re not. Expectations were higher than the food delivered.
I had watched Stanley Tucci visit here recently and decided to book for our anniversary whist in Rome .We arrived an hour early due to the bus. No issues with accomodating our early arrival. All the staff were friendly and fantastic service. The food was amazing, highly recommended getting the bistecca, it was fantastic and better than we had in Florence. Also had the artichoke, we had never had anything like it..amazing.
Highly recommended visiting, we will definitely be returning on our next visit to Rome.
Food: The Florentine T-bone is out of the world. One of the best steaks I’ve ever had. It’s so smoky and fatty. We also got a side of porcini mushroom that tasted extra amazing in the beef tallow. Other dishes were great too, the gnocchi with lamb ragu (lamb was very tender) and grilled squid were both delicious.
Vibe: Old school Roman eatery. Very friendly staff and owner. The owner doesn’t speak much English but proudly told us that the restaurant has been in her family for five generations now. Oh & we told her that we were visiting from Brooklyn NY and she showed us photos of Eric Adams and Stanley Tucci during their visits. They also sent us some fernet branca on the house after dinner!
Location: We stayed near Basilica of St Mary Major so it was like a 30 min walk for us. Had to go past the Termini station area which isn’t super pleasant, feels kinda like walking through the canal street area on the Tribeca side after sunset. The neighborhood the restaurant is in feels like east village mixed with bed-stuy. Some dive bars here and there, and definitely don’t see many tourists. Pretty interesting neighborhood to explore.
Their carbonara was perhaps some of the best pasta I’ve had in Italy. Using pork cheek instead of bacon, really enhanced the flavor of the dish.
We added a Roman Roll (vegetables, wrapped in ham, surrounded by thinly shaved beef) which had an amazing gravy and almost tasted like beef stew.
The restaurant has several sections of seats inside and has an outdoor section at the front of the restaurant seat several more tables (perhaps 20 tables)
If you’re looking for something authentic, it’s worth the extra drive to get there. The staff went out of their way to make us comfortable, and assisted us in ordering a taxi for the ride home.
Reservations are made very easily online, note that they do not start their dinner service till 7 PM in the evening. Lunch and sometime around three.
