I haven’t been to Pok-e-Joe in years. Brisket was dry and lacked flavor, but everything else, including pork ribs, a beef sausage and sides was pretty good – just like I remember. The toasted slice of bread was extra tasty.

A rainy night in Austin was the perfect time to try Pok E Jo’s BBC. OH SO GOOD! I had the pulled pork plate – delish in every way. The sides were potato salad and the jalapeño cornbread casserole. The jalapeño cornbread casserole? A party in your mouth good… especially with the pinto bean sauce over it. This is not my momma’s cooking, it’s better (sorry Mom!). I’ll definitely be back.

This place is wonderful. All food on display. All the sides you need for a great BBQ dinner. Great moist ribs perfectly seasoned. Outstanding brisket potato with chunks of meat. Mac and Cheese on point. Brisket sandwich the Bomb! Definitely love coming here. I’ve tried it all so just know whatever you pick will be a Winner!!

Good barbecue first time I ever ate there and the service. The people that cook there and the people that wait on you are wonderful people. The food was outstanding. I had the best barbecue brisket sandwich I ever had and I had some wonderful homemade potato salad that was to die for and I had a huge Coke. All you can drink and then they had a fix-ins bar where you could get several kinds of pickles. A couple different kinds of salsa. They had two kinds of cut up onions for you and then they had three different barbecue sauces. Okay from regular to medium to hot barbecue sauces okay self-serve absolute wonderful time. Wonderful lunch I had and the manager came over and spoke to me. Got to know him. I believe his name was Eric. I don’t know but he’s from the Midwest like me and he relocated down to the Austin area as well. I highly recommend this place for the best. Barbecue in the area in my opinion. Very good! Wonderful! Just splendid. Thank you, poke Joe’s sincerely, Joseph Hall

Great service, BBQ, and sweet BBQ sauce, but I wasn’t a fan of the beans or lemonade. Something about the taste was off on the beans and the lemonade was not my favorite. The Texas toast was perfect. For spending so much money, I really want the food to be fantastic. I loved the ambiance, though. It reminded me of the inside of a farm supply store we went to for animal feed as a kid.

Update: we went back because this is a convenient location for us. The broccoli is drowning in plastic fake cheese and the Mac and cheese is probably in the same cheese, but it tastes so dang good. The fries were fried fresh. I gave the lemonade another shot and when watered down by melted ice, it’s better.

Brisket is always nice and moist, and the chicken tender. And both consistently seasoned perfectly.  I find the potato salad to taste great, but often there are pieces of potato that really should have been cut smaller.  We also enjoy the mac and cheese. Our only disappointment is the peach cobbler.  From what I read in the reviews, it’s not supposed to be typical cobbler.  If that’s the case–it should say so on the menu. Texans know their cobblers, and this version doesn’t meet the standard.

If you’re looking for a quick BBQ lunch on a weekday there are a few chain options around. Pok-e-Jo’s is one of those options. It’s not the best chain, Rudy’s is definitely better, but it’s not terrible. The moist brisket is tender. It’s a lower quality of meat than you would get at a top barbecue place so the fat doesn’t render as you would desire. There is almost no bark on the brisket slices and very little flavor. Tender and bland but edible. The sausage has good flavor but is generally dry. Where Pok-e-Jo’s does stand out is with their sides. They have a ton of options and they are generally quite good. I really enjoy their potato salad. If your looking for the top barbecue in Austin this isn’t it, however; it’s a pretty good work week lunch spot.

Great local spot.. ribs were great, the jalapeño cheese sausage was not as what I expected but still flavorful. Fried okra and fries were actually delicious. Spicy bbq sauce is a definite to try. Service was great and fast. Interior decor could use a little bit of sprucing up. For a 2 meat plate I honestly expected more than 2 pieces of ribs, so servings were small in my opinion for the price. I’d definitely stop by again though.
