I do think it’s one of the top pizzas in Richmond. No it is not a gourmet pizza no but it’s pretty close to New York pizza. They have like two tables so most of its takeout. some people found the sauce a little spicy. It definitely had a little bit of it, but it wasn’t like overbearing. I think they’re using strong. Good quality ingredients. They’re very large pizzas. I think I give it an A-.

This is about as close to real NYC pizza as you’ll find in Richmond—a very good pie. Cooked on Pizza Master ovens and topped with Grande mozzarella, it even has that golden “sheen” you see on legit NYC slices.
The crust is long-fermented with a slow rise, giving it the perfect chew and just the right amount of char. One thing worth noting—and not a dig at the shop or their prep—is that they’re a bit heavier on the semolina. It adds a little extra texture to the crust, which is slightly different from a classic NYC slice, but it didn’t take away from the pizza at all.
The sauce was excellent, though it has a bit more going on than a classic NYC tomato sauce—slightly more flavor and a touch of heat on the back end. Not a bad thing at all, just different from traditional.
Solid cup-and-char pepperoni. The dining area is very small (two four-top tables), so plan on carryout, but there’s plenty of nearby parking if you want to eat right away.
I travel to NYC a few times a year for pizza, and I can honestly say this is legit NYC-style. I’ll 100% be back.

New Haven apizza aficionado here. Excellent crust, made to order (NH crispy please) but the sauce not quite New Haven or to my liking. Still the best apizza so far for me in VA! BTW I ordered three pies – plain, mozzarella, and white. Big and plentiful. Limited seating as stated, why low on atmosphere. Actually cheese was better reheated today!

Finally visited here after giving it a couple weeks to settle in. This is easily the best pizza in Richmond. The crust is light, but crispy with a good chew. The sauce is bright and tangy and they finish each slice with grated fresh Parmesan.

Bravo.

A lot of pizza in Richmond tastes the same. You know what I’m talking about. Mungo’s pizzas don’t. These pies stand apart. And when you walk in the chef owner pizza master greets you. And he’s a richmonder born and raised. Too many good things to say about this place but first and foremost these slices are it.

Got the Ricotta pizza comes with pepperoni and sausage. Meats had a nice spice or kick to them. The pizza itself good sauce and cheese ratio, crust crisped to perfection imo, some may like greasier or floppier pizza, but this has a nice crunch or bite to it. Highly recommend

Im here for the FOOD, so lemme get the Service & Atmosphere done quickly so i can get to the MOST important stuff
SERVICE: Great: friendly, (and i mean the ‘genuine/real’ kind of friendly, NOT the ‘forced/ faked’ kind ). ATMOSPHERE: I was able breath just fine in there without my space-helmet, so that qualifies as a ‘thumbs up’, right? Seriously though, the place was really clean, smelled amazing, and, while they do have a few small tables if ya need to eat there, im thinking most folks are prob gonna wanna do take-out.

Okay…the Pies. I’ll be fully transparent: For MANY years running, ive had a few other Pizza spots that have been my ‘go-to’ faves…”8 1/2″ on Strawberry St, “Two Guys” over in Short Pump (now closed after the pandemic) & “Genova’s Pizza Station” on Buford Rd. Each of the above does/did ‘its own thang’ with their pies. “8 1/2” is probably the most ‘unique’ style & flavor of the bunch though, and, over the years ive hit them up more than the others above. My preference in pies tends to lean towards a strong ‘zest’, ‘tangyness’ of flavor, and ‘8 1/2’ brings that consistently.

Enter “Pizzeria Mungo”.
Folks, we have “a contenda’!”
Lemme just say this…in the past few months since first trying Mungo out, we may have already ordered from em FIVE times. That says a LOT.

I LOVE the super thin AND super TASTY crust. (Also, the crust has the perfect texture for me too…a little crispy AND chewy) Reheats nicely in the air fryer btw
Sauce has really great zest! (where “8 1/2” might be a ‘combo puch in the face’ blast of zest, “Mungo” gives you one solid steady ‘jab’ of zest). When i dont even need to add any spice on myself, thats means you’ve got a keeper here

My pie ive gotten everytime has been the “Double Pepperoni & Mushroom” with extra Mushrooms.
(occasionally with extra sauce too, if im ‘feelin extra fancy’ at the time). It has two different kinds of pepperoni on it…Talk about flavor ! With or without the ‘extra’ sauce tho, i have ‘no notes’!✊

Needless to say, “Pizzeria Mungo” has arrived and IMMEDIATELY been added to my ‘go-to spots’ in town. I like a variety of pie styles, so ill still be grabbing from my other historical spots as well…. but i aint gonna lie, this newcomer “Mungo” has come in outta nowhere and straight-up WOWed me!!

Congrats and THANKS to the owner and crew! I’ll be seein’ you (again ) reeeeeal soon.✌

I’m so happy I can have a slice of home here in RVA. This is a must for new York style pizza lovers. Excellent crust, cheese to sauce ratio is perfect.
