I happened upon Pistarro’s while walking around downtown Frederick and needed a late lunch. I’m so glad I stopped in.
Service was quick without feeling rushed, which I appreciated. The atmosphere was warm and comfortable. It had that relaxed wine-bar-meets-Italian-spot feel that makes you want to sit and stay a while.
I ordered the gluten-free Margherita pizza and it was honestly wonderful. The crust was cooked perfectly, not soggy, not dry. The sauce tasted fresh, the cheese was balanced, and the basil on top just made it feel simple and done right. You wouldn’t feel like you were missing out choosing the gluten-free option.
I also had the roasted beet and goat cheese salad, which was beautiful and fresh. The beets were tender, the goat cheese creamy, and everything tasted thoughtfully put together. Paired it with a crisp white wine that complemented the meal perfectly.
They also had a nice variety of desserts, which I love to see.
Overall, it was a really solid lunch. Fresh ingredients, good wine, great gluten-free option, and speedy service. I’d absolutely go back.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ — Pistarro’s Ristorante Pizzeria Napoletana – Frederick, Maryland

If you’re looking for solid Italian food and decent wood-fired Neapolitan-style pizza in Frederick, Pistarro’s is absolutely worth your time.

This has been a go-to spot for my wife and me whenever we’re craving Italian. We’ve both lived in Italy, so our expectations are fairly high. No — it’s not Italy (let’s be honest, Italy sets the bar ridiculously high ), but for Frederick, this place comes impressively close in quality and execution. We’ve been dining here since 2021, not constantly, but consistently — and we’ve never had a bad experience with the food.

The quality has always been reliable. From appetizers like the fried calamari (which is absolutely fantastic) to their pasta dishes, everything has been well-prepared and thoughtfully seasoned. The pasta is always cooked properly — never overdone, never bland — which is something many places miss.

Now let’s talk pizza.

I’m a pizza chef myself and specialize specifically in Neapolitan-style pizza, so I’m pretty particular. Whenever I try a new pizza place, I always start with a Margherita pizza. That’s my baseline — if you can’t get the fundamentals right, the more complex pizzas don’t matter. The very first pizza I ever had at Pistarro’s was the Margherita, and let me tell you… it was a winner. It genuinely took me back to Italy. For Neapolitan pizza offered locally, this is one of the better executions you’ll find in the area.

The atmosphere is another strong point. When you walk in, you’re greeted right away. There’s a large bar area, multiple seating options, and a separate dining space where you can actually watch the pizzas being made. The two large wood-fired ovens are in full view, which I personally love — dinner and a show.

The staff has consistently been excellent. From the front-of-house greeting to the waitstaff, everyone has always been friendly, attentive, and genuinely engaged. Whether we’re seated immediately or wait a few minutes, the experience never feels rushed or neglected. Servers are great about drink refills, menu questions, and overall attentiveness.

One experience really stands out and says a lot about how they treat their customers.

In March of 2025, my wife and I stopped in for lunch. I had just returned from Michigan and had a limited-edition Harley-Davidson hat from my hometown dealership sitting on the chair next to me. After we finished our calamari, our waitress came by to clear the table. Unfortunately, the marinara dish slipped and spilled onto my hat. Accidents happen — I wasn’t upset at all.

What mattered was how they handled it.

She was immediately apologetic, the manager came over right away, and they asked for permission to take the hat to try and clean it. They rinsed it, used soap, and genuinely did everything they could. They did a phenomenal job — only a very faint tint remained. And I mean very very faint! Almost can’t even tell On top of that, they offered to comp the price of the hat from of our bill to make things right.

That’s how you take care of customers. Honest mistake, fully owned, and handled professionally.

To wrap it up: from the food, to the staff, to the atmosphere, Pistarro’s is a very solid Italian restaurant in Frederick. We enjoy it every time we go, and I trust that if an issue ever came up, it would be handled just as well as everything else has been.

Highly recommend if you’re in the mood for Italian — especially if wood-fired pizza is your thing.

This was our first time there very impressed the food reminds you of the Sunday Italian dinners. The red sauce and Alfredo is also really good and would really recommend on anything. Our server Julio was attentive and helpful with suggestions. The drinks an hors d’oeuvres were also great.

Me and my dad had a great first time here. Food was great! The crust on this pizza was definitely top notch! Parking was difficult for us, but that’s always a thing in downtown Fredrick.

Kids look to be ok for coming, because there is a playground right next to the restaurant.

We also had a really good server! We forgot her name sadly though the food also came really fast!

Overall, this restaurant is great! 5 stars!

Bartender was very attentive and checking if we wanted anything else, never had to flag him down.

Food was just ok. The pepperoni on the pizza was delicious but the sausage had little flavor. Skip the meatballs and bruschetta.

Very attentive staff. Food was good in general. The quick fried calamari was delicious. The pepperoni pizza is very good too. The pasta is Ok. The tiramisu is very good, but the espresso is not really an espresso unfortunately it’s nothing more than a strong coffee. Overall the place is nice and worth going back if you know what to order. Read the reviews before going.

Not much on atmosphere, we were partying of 8 and it was tight. Meatball appetizer were great but very small portion (3). Main dish said Italian sausage, there was none. Coffee delicious though. POOR PARKING. Waiter was spectacular! Not at all what I expected especially since I hear it advertised regularly. Won’t go back

We came here for lunch and ordered pizzas and an appetizer. We ordered Calamari for starters and Pizza Margarita and Pizza Donatella. They calamari came in a small bowl with 2 sauces, marinara and some herby pesto sauce. We didn’t expect it to be small since it was a hefty $19 cost to eat average tasting calamari. You can tell it wasn’t fresh plus no tentacles at all, why? The only saving grace was the sauces, they were on point. We wish that the hefty price would be commensurate to the amount of food. The pizza was average as well. It didn’t wow us. It looked legit with the mozzarella, tomato sauce and the basil, but it’s missing something? The same thing with the Donatella, it had porciutto, ricotta and arugula, but it was missing a balsamic sauce drizzled on top to give it sharpness and extra flavor. We want to compliment the crust because it was the best part. Thanks to the 2 brick oven in the restaurant. At least the staff were welcoming and friendly.

We loved the atmosphere, the food was amazing . Our waiter(Rogat) wasn’t the best took a long time to get our food order. We asked for tea and brought over the tea box, my daughter grabbed one to show my mom and he snatched it from her. The manager later came over to ask how he was doing and we said he’s fine because we didn’t want to start anything but should have been honest. He wasn’t very friendly and a bit unprofessional. My daughter’s bf came to say because he also works there and literally was asking him a lot of personal questions in front of us. My husband was very bothered but tried to keep himself calm because it was an early Mother’s Day dinner. If we go back we definitely will request someone else.
