I ordered octopus meal and a chicken mozambique meal for take out. After being told our wait time was approximately 15-20 minutes; we got ready to leave and was leaving 10 minutes after we had called and was receiving a call from the restaurant. They ran out of chicken breast and asked us to wait an extra 15 minutes on top of what our wait time already was. So after waiting another 20 mins we finally received our food. Opened the bag in the car the make sure everything that was ordered was there like anyone else would do! The chicken meal was decent tasting but dry. Which I dont understand because it’s in mozambique sauce. Within the chicken mozambique’s side of rice there were a couple of stray onions from another meal. There was also a long hair in the rice as well. The octopus was unfortunately prepared very badly. The membrane and brain of the octopus was not cleared out. It was very hard to chew and had and awful aftertaste. The tentacles were very hard to chew like a hockey puck. I called back and was very respectful and patient. I asked for a refund for only the octopus meal because it can NOT be eaten. They said they couldn’t refund me my money because I paid cash. That the only thing that could and was offered was a store credit but why would I want to come back to a place that doesn’t respect their paying customers?!? Then they stated that because “I was eating the food in the car that it was another reason they can’t refund me my money??? I got two meals my girlfriend ate a fry or two out of HER FOOD!! I did not EAT OUT OF MY FOOD AT THE TIME. I tried to explain that this is very inappropriate behavior to be WATCHING their customers in THEIR vehicles and then I said have a good day and hung up because clearly this business doesn’t care about their customers for them to talk to us with very bad attitudes like they couldn’t wait for the conversation to be done with. They were nice at first because they want your money! don’t be a fool like me and fall for it..

The Service:

The employee answering the phone had wonderful phone etiquette. She gave a friendly greeting and was very helpful in answering questions. Upon arrival for pickup I was greeted with a kind smile and welcomed into the establishment.

This fast casual restaurant was very neat and orderly. All table tops were clean and chairs were tucked in which indicates an owner paying attention to the small details that leave an impression.

Inviting and comfortable atmosphere relative to the venue.

The Food:

The overall meal fell short of expectations. I appreciate the delicate but vibrant flavor profile of Portuguese cuisine. However, I experienced very muted flavorings. The steak was cooked well but very under-seasoned and the house gravy wasn’t spiced enough to compensate.

The shrimp was cooked perfectly and nicely absorbed the house gravy to lend some taste. Fries were as expected but the jasmine rice was overcooked losing the signature texture and fragrance.

There were large chunks of onion in the rice which adds moisture during the cooking process resulting in a slightly mushy consistency.

In my opinion, the house gravy was lacking in citrus (lemon zest), allium vegetables, fresh herbs and toasted spices. Given the name of the restaurant I was disappointed the house gravy lacked undertones of heat associated with red chili peppers.

Nonetheless, it’s evident this restaurant seeks to pay homage to their culture, and there is love in the cuisine. As such, I’m looking forward to further exploring the menu.

The Opportunity:

I would recommend alternative packaging for this type of order. Placing the hot steak, shrimp and house gravy at the bottom of the styrofoam container, lined with aluminum foil, traps moisture that created condensation on top of the rice and fries- further altering the texture of the rice and made some fries very soggy. I think using paper pail boxes for fries and rice would yield a better result.

UPDATE:

As recommend, I tried the Azorean steak; I also ordered the Shrimp Mozambique. Firstly, I remain very impressed with the restaurant’s customer service, and the owner’s attention to detail. I also appreciate the steak being packed in a separate container because of the sauce.

The Azorean steak introduced me to a new flavor profile, so I’m thankful for that cultural experience. The shrimp was once again cooked perfectly; the Mozambique sauce was light in spices and heat, but enjoyable nonetheless.

The rice was cooked perfectly and tasted good.
A welcomed improvement from my last visit.

Incredibly kind and effective service from the gentleman today who answered the many questions we had. The codfish cakes were fresh and crispy and so good. The chicken plate was tasty. I found the price to be reasonable. Definitely recommend!

I usually come here with my friend for the 2 bifianas or their quahog stuffing. Usually the bifianas come with a little sauce on the side this week they did not and sandwich was made sloppy and did not taste the same. We had also decided to stop by yesterday for their Chicken Mozambique special, unfortunately the sauce lacked seasoning. Maybe there was a different cook covering this week? Not entirely sure but usually it’s a guy working in there and both times we went this week it was woman working. Still plan on coming back as I love the quahog stuffing!!

Was in the mood for Portuguese food and decided to get takeout from Piri Piri for the first time. They were very busy, quoted me an hour for take out and were right on time. Went with the Bacalhua Bras and a Prego no Prato. If you want a delicious home cooked meal from your Tia Maria’s, jump in your car and make the drive. I was really glad i gave them a try. The bacalhua came with a huge portion and tasted great. Comes with eggs, onions, fries and olive oil. My picky wife went with the steak and loved it. I gave it a try and quickly saw why. Very nice portuguese steak sauce with garlic and very good Jasmine rice. They are small place set back off the road, so be on the look out. Plenty of signs, but I passed it on my first trip. Highly recommend for take out. Dine in seating is limited and could be a challenge during peak times. Don’t judge a book by its cover. The magic happens in the kitchen.
