We returned to the Pioneer Saloon after several visits twenty years ago, when it was a simple local hangout with the menu painted on the wall chastising those who asked for one at the table. Although it is now much more popular and therefore very crowed, it was a fantastic experience! Since they do not take reservations, we arrived on Wednesday evening at 5:30; the place was packed. The hostess advised us that it would be a 45 minute wait for dinner, so we took our beeper and managed to squeeze in at the bar for a drink. In 20 minutes we were called to our table which was the best in the house right next to the Grizzly bear! Pete, our knowledgable, charming waiter was terrific. The wine he recommended was perfect and our dinners, beef ribs for me and prime rib for my husband, were super plus the berry cobbler with vanilla ice cream was a great finale. A visit to the Pioneer Saloon is a combination of history, entertainment and culinary delight! The place is packed with western animal trophies, historic guns and vintage posters. The staff is friendly and professional making everyone feel at home. It is a must do experience for anyone lucky enough to be in Ketchum for an evening. I cannot recommend it more highly. Thank-you to Stephen Staats, the owner, and to those who came before him to preserve this landmark. It is an historic treasure which serves high quality food for reasonable prices. Bravo to all at the Pioneer Saloon! We hope to return one day from sunny Florida for another visit. Tina & Robert Douglass

Our group was in town for a ski trip and we were really looking forward to trying the Pioneer Saloon. Unfortunately, we never actually got to experience it because our interaction at the hostess stand left a lot to be desired.
We were given a buzzer at 4:00 PM and were told there would be a wait. By 9:30 PM, it still hadn’t gone off. During those 5.5 hours, we ended up going to the Casino Bar and The Cellar for dinner instead. After a great meal and excellent service at The Cellar, we kindly returned the buzzer to what was, at that point, a mostly empty Pioneer restaurant.
Ketchum is a great town with some very kind folks. Hopefully Pioneer can hire one of them to improve their front-of-house experience.

What a great, fun, and stimulating restaurant / bar to visit with friends, workmates or that special someone. The atmosphere was electric, and the food was delicious, beware: really large portions! I had the shrimp and steak medallions and many at my table ordered the ribeye steak with Idaho potatoes, of course! There was so much to see in the wall and hanging off the ceiling, even a full sized canoe! There was a large room downstairs but it was closed.

We visited the restaurant at 4:00 PM and asked to put our name in for around 6:30 PM. At that time, we were given a pager and told to return prior to 6:30, and that the pager would serve as our place in line.
We came back at 6:07 PM and notified the hostess that we had arrived. We were told they would buzz us when our table was ready. After waiting until 7:15 PM, we checked in again. At that point, the managing party, Gina, told us we had not shown up on time and that we would need to continue waiting. When we politely asked how much longer it might be, we were told we were fourth on the list.
We were never buzzed. At 9:30 PM, after waiting several more hours without any notification, we returned the pager and asked what had happened. Gina stated that she had buzzed us multiple times shortly after we left the stand at 7:15 PM. However, we had been seated at a nearby bar the entire time, where another customer actually received a buzz during that period.
Overall, the experience was extremely disappointing. The wait time was excessive, the communication was poor, and the interaction with the hostess felt unnecessarily confrontational. Based on this experience, we would not recommend this restaurant.

Bar area is great, service can be cold.
Fantastic historical items in the bar and restaurant.
Visiting from London and grabbed a buzzer for a restaurant area. Waited for an hour and the buzzer buzzed. Owner took one look at us and decided “no”. We waited another half an hour and the same guy told us “it’ll be a while” and swore blind that the buzzer didn’t go off. We left disappointed without food and with a lot of unnecessary waiting. If he didn’t like us, tell us plainly. Ah well…

Super fun bar with amazing vibe and decor.
Cocktail list was excellent. Execution on cocktails was not great. We both ordered their famous margarita, which was very watery and lacked flavor. Thankfully, they took it back and we ordered two other cocktails which were very good. We ordered another round of the same cocktails, and they were not the same as before. One was good the other not. . Wonder what happened?
We weren’t quite ready for dinner so we ordered the artichoke which was good.
This is clearly a popular bar and known amongst locals, as well as tourists.
We recommend this place, but hoping that you have a better experience with the cocktails.

This is an amazing must do restaurant in Ketchum/Sun Valley. The steaks, potatoes and local fish were outstanding. The service was on point and friendly. Drinks were generous. Prices were SO reasonable! The history of the place and the museum pieces alone make it worthy of visiting. Thank you for a great time at this restaurant!

Great experience with excellent service. had the prime rib and the sour dough bread they brought out was amazing. asked for an end cut prime rib but the largest cut. they grilled up a cut to make it resemble and end cut, which really wasn’t what I was going for. but it was still tasty. they had a margherita called ‘besr margherita in the universe’ and it was most certainly not. but still a great atmosphere and experience. would go back .

Me, Dad, and Mom, stopped here tonight for dinner while staying at the Sun Valley Lodge. The block was under construction. The walk through the construction was definitely worth it. The atmosphere was dimmly lit and felt personal. Dad had the beef kabobs, mom had a shrimp cocktail, and I had the prime rib and grilled shrimp. Everything was absolutely delightful. Restaurant was busy and timeliness was still perfect. My prime rib was superb and my grilled shrimp were huge, delightful, and butterflied perfectly. Moms shrimp cocktail was also top notch. Highly recommend a visit to this fine establishment.

I hadn’t been here for probably a decade. The atmosphere and ambience are the same—very western/lots of dead animal heads.
The FOOD is way better than I remember. It was excellent. Outstanding.
