Let’s start with their Beef Kare Kare which is a slow cooked stew with ridiculously tender beef in a peanut based sauce. It also had beef tripe, eggplant, asparagus, bok choy, cabbage and probably a lot of different ingredients for the sauce. It was served with a side of bagoong alamang (fermented shrimp paste) and steamed rice. The peanut flavor was subtle and the flavor was modest giving me comfort food vibes! The most surprising thing of this whole experience was the bagoong alamang. I had no clue what this was until I did some research later on but I knew it was something fishy and fermented based on the smell. Talk about a flavor kapow though. If you want to crank the flavor profile of this dish to the max, this will do it. When I say it was an explosion of flavors, I am not kidding. It was a bit overwhelming at first but it definitely grew on me as I ate more of it. Oh, and a little goes a long way with this stuff. What will stick with me though is how tender that beef was. I know this dish can also be served with oxtail and it definitely rivaled the tenderest oxtail I have ever had. If this meat was on any sort of bone, it would’ve fallen right off!
Lastly, the desserts which were an interesting experience too. The cassava cake was probably my favorite of the two. It almost tasted like there was some toasted coconut in there, and I liked the sweetness of the top. The cassava cake below was simple in flavor so it wasn’t overwhelmingly sweet. The texture was dense and a bit chewy for anyone wondering. However, this is how it is traditionally supposed to be, and it tasted pretty good. The Sapin-Sapin was stretchy and chewy with toasted coconut on top. I couldn’t distinguish any strong noticeable flavors in the layers but it was still fun to try. There was also a dessert called Ginataang Bilo Bilo which looked very appealing too but I will just have to try it next time. I just had a feeling that it would’ve probably been my favorite of the three.
Oh and this food fed me for lunch and dinner so you won’t be leaving here hungry. It is also inside an asian grocery store so you could do a little shopping as well while you’re here! The parking was relatively easy to find in the surrounding neighborhoods, and I don’t believe they had any restraunt seating so you will more than likely be taking it to go. Anyways, good Filipino food is quite limited in the Twin Cities so I am glad we have a unique spot like this!
