We drove over on a freezing Sunday afternoon. Pik N Pig is positioned about the 50 yard line of a small airport runway. As we arrived we noticed a small plane preparing for takeoff, which thrilled my 15 year old son. While we waited a few minutes for a table a second plane also took off. This was a pretty cool addition to a BBQ joint which I haven’t seen before.

After we set foot out of the car, we could immediately smell the comforting and calling aroma of slow burning hickory. Today it wasn’t just saying come on in for great BBQ, it was strongly emphasizing the warmth inside the building.

The restaurant was very busy and we waited a few minutes to get a table. On warmer days there is a large, covered, outdoor seating area which would be wonderful to enjoy BBQ under while watching the small planes arrive and depart. We didn’t meet any pilots but I’m sure on a busier/ warmer day we would have.

I ordered the (BBQ) pulled pork plate, with sides of fries and coleslaw. Our server was very hospitable and kind. In a couple minutes we had the hush puppies served with a jalapeno butter which I found very tasty. She also kept our sweet tea topped off throughout the meal.

When the BBQ pulled pork plate arrived, I could see some bark which is a favorite of mine. The BBQ was tender, but a little dry, with moderate flavor. I tried both sauces which were a Spicy Vinegar and a Honey Barbecue. My taste buds usually prefer vinegar, which had a good flavor but was a bit too spicy for me. The Honey Barbecue was really good. This is actually a tomato based sauce, with a great flavor, which is a rare, but not uncommon, find in the east Carolinas. This is just my opinion, but unfortunately I didn’t feel like it paired well with the BBQ pulled pork, so I stuck with the Spicy Vinegar.

I would definitely come back, to enjoy the airfield and BBQ experience.

The brisket was fantastic. The jalapeño butter was great with the hush puppies and the atmosphere was nice and relaxed. We enjoyed eating outside. This place was definitely worth the drive and the
prices were fantastic.

Great BBQ joint. We were flying from FL to Niagara Falls, and heard about this place being a great midway lunch spot. Tight runway makes for a fun approach.
We arrived 10 minutes before they opened (a Saturday) and there was a line out the door already. Service was fast, food was warm (and wonderful), and staff was friendly.
We got brisket and pulled pork, brisket was the winner here to me, and some great southern sweet tea.
10/10 would visit on another flight by.

Food, service and atmosphere were all great. We had lunch on a Thursday and had no wait, but people were waiting when we left. We sat outside and were able to see several small planes take off and land. They have table service and you can eat inside or in an outside covered area. The brisket and ‘nana pudding were delicious. The small museum is currently closed and is being relocated.

Excellent service and food!! The only reason I gave 4 stars on atmosphere is because it was pretty warm inside the restaurant. Jarod provided Excellent service!! We’ll be back!! Pretty cool being able to watch planes take off and land right there!! Cool WW1 and WW2 history displays too!! Highly recommended!!

Arrived about 1:30 today for a late lunch to find a 20 minute wait. Enjoyed watching small aircraft come and go while imbibing in an ice cold beer during our wait ~ relaxing and enjoyable. Seated for lunch in a timely fashion. Our table ordered the shareable platter, a pulled pork sandwich and the BBQ brisket plate. Food was plentiful, brisket was the decided “winner” as far as we were concerned. Service was prompt and friendly. Price was fair for quantity and quality. I would recommend a visit for a delicious meal in a unique and entertaining environment.
