First things first: the restaurant is easy enough to find, but it’s self-parking, so may the odds be ever in your favor.
My order was to-go: two fish sandwiches, two sides, cornbread, and sweet tea.
Let’s start with the highlights. The service was great—friendly and efficient, which always sets a good tone. The fish itself was also very good. It’s served on a brioche roll and definitely shines when it’s fresh and hot, so if you order it, eat it immediately. This is not a “let it sit in the car while you run errands” kind of sandwich.
The cornbread was a win: sweet, moist, and genuinely delicious. It paired nicely with the baked beans.
Speaking of the baked beans—they were decent. Well-seasoned enough to be enjoyable, but not particularly memorable.
Now… we need to talk about the mac and cheese. Oh no. No, no, no. The cheese was basically undetectable, and the texture leaned more toward a milk-custard situation than a cheesy pasta dish. There was also zero seasoning to speak of. I’ll admit: good mac and cheese seems to be surprisingly hard to come by in Richmond. My humble suggestion? Lean into a classic shells-and-cheese or noodles-and-cheese approach. Those are far more forgiving and could save a lot of heartache.
The green beans were… fine. Edible, but not particularly flavorful.
And then there was the sweet tea—which frankly offended my Southern roots. It tasted concentrated, with a strange citric bite, almost like it came from a mix. Yes, it was sweet (the one Southern trait it had going for it), but the flavor leaned more toward caramel coloring and citric acid than freshly brewed tea. Sweet tea is one of the easiest things to make in big batches, so I’d love to see a fresh-brewed version here.
I genuinely enjoy trying local restaurants, and I want them to succeed. But the reality is that diners need a reason to choose a local spot over fast-casual chains. A few tweaks to the sides and drinks could make a big difference.
One last note: there is a 20% gratuity added. Personally, I have no issue with that—restaurant staff deserve fair wages—but it’s good to know going in so there are no surprises.
Would I come back? For the fish sandwich and cornbread—yes. For the mac and cheese… absolutely not.
Cons
There were some cons as to why I didn’t give it 5 stars. The Mac and cheese was not to my liking. I don’t like the grainy texture in Mac and cheese made with egg. The flavor in it was not strong or cheesy enough. And the Brisket, though tender, needed more flavor to me. You couldn’t enjoy it without sauce. Also the water glasses were not that clean when we visited. You will have to parallel park too so some people don’t like that. But it’s downtown so it’s to be expected.
BBQ Flavor
Fast service
I had an awesome meal at *Pig and Brew*!
The *brisket* was full of flavor and cooked perfectly, and the *chicken wings* were crispy and delicious.
The *pulled pork* was tender and flavorful, and the *cole slaw* and *cheese fries* were the perfect sides to round out the meal.
Everything was absolutely delicious, and the service was fast and friendly.
Highly recommend this place for anyone craving great BBQ!
