Phowheels – Union Market District

Phowheels has landed at Union Market! The family-run business started as a food truck and built a loyal following serving pho, banh mi and tacos.

The pork belly banh mi was extremely delicious and decadent. Bread was crispy and the pork was hot. Agreed with another reviewer that I personally prefer a little bit more pickled veggie, but overall the sandwich was great. The Vietnamese iced coffee was pretty good as well!

I think one of the great things about going out for pho is that there are a variety of meat cuts available at a fixed price at most places. The ability to have brisket, rare eye round, flank, etc. without having significant additional fees is something I look forward to. Unfortunately, phowheels only allows one meat option at the base price, and the price climbs rapidly as you add additional meats. I’m never one to complain about price, especially when it comes to pho, but this honestly irked me, especially as the prices here are higher than PhoXotic which was recently added to the Michelin guide and makes their noodles in house. Perhaps Union Market is just expensive to operate in?

The pho itself was also quite bad in my opinion (I have tried many places in the US and Vietnam, but obviously this is just my opinion). The flavor was so heavy on star anise and cinnamon that I could not taste any of the beef whatsoever. If I come again I’ll stick to the fusion options.

As for the banh mi, I think the chicken banh mi is decent and the price is okay for the size of the sandwich. The bread isn’t really traditional but it’s passable. The bo khirria cheesesteak was honestly pretty great though. Realistically I think most people would get a food coma after two bites, but the cheese works well with the cozy spices that they use and mellows them out (whereas they are overpowering in the pho imo).

Vietnamese coffee is pretty standard here. The portion is quite massive (20 oz) so I’d be careful if you’re sensitive to caffeine.

My experience at PhoWheels was incredible. The owner was so welcoming and helpful in choosing what to try out. The cheesesteak was TO DIE FOR. Me and my friend felt very welcomed to the city. Customer service is so important and they killed it on that end as well as one of the tastiest cheese steaks I’ve ever had period! Cannot recommend this place enough. You have to stop at PhoWheels!

The beef pho was excellent! My travel partner has a nut and sesame oil allergy, so finding allergy friendly food was a bit of a challenge. This pho was the best option for him. The portions are huge, so I definitely recommend sharing if you’re not too hungry. The employees are great with giving recommendations and there were plenty of condiments to enhance your dish. I’d definitely visit here again the next time I’m in town!

I stop by this pho spot pretty often, and it’s consistently great every time. The broth is flavorful, the portions are generous and everything comes out fresh. The manager Adrian is always friendly, attentive, and has excellent customer service. Food usually comes out quickly too. Definitely worth a visit if you’re craving some pho in the Union Market area!

PhoWheels serves up some of the most soulful Vietnamese fusion food I’ve ever had. Their Bo Khirria blends classic Vietnamese flavors with Mexican street food flair that can’t be found elsewhere. I can’t wait to revisit and try everything else on their menu

It took a while for someone to be available to help out at the counter, but we got the oxtail pho and it was REALLY good. Pho was flavorful and piping hot, lots of noodles, and they gave us four large pieces of oxtail meat with bone. It was very tender and tasted great. Would definitely return.
