First time trying Vietnamese food and this place was phenomenal! Family owned and run, small, simple, intimate, and extremely tasty food. Our appetizer and meals came out quickly and it was hot and delicious. The pho was flavorful, earthy, and rich – great first impression of this country’s famous dish!

Turns out this place is super understaffed and the owner (the grandma) is getting older and sometimes has health issues, causing her to close early and have unpredictable hours. We came in around 6:20 one night and watch them turn off the open sign around 7:15, because that’s when they ran out of pho for the day – love it! The grandma even came out from the kitchen and filled our waters and greeted us – even walked us to the front register to pay.

Will be coming back here!

While I was recovering from my kidney transplant, my ICU nurse and I were talking about pho. I told him I wanted to find the best bowl in town. Nick asked his friend which pho house is the best in SLC. Pho Tay Ho was suggested so today we tried it out.

The venue is quite interesting. It’s in an old house which is cool. There’s quite a few tables and can hold quite a few guests. We did arrive a little after 5. It was starting to get busy after we placed our order. I’m happy we got there when we did.

They are very very very short staffed. You get your own utensils. Everything is brought all at once said a notice on the fridge. You actually write your own order down on the ordering pad. They don’t really check up on you. So, service is not to be expected. They drop your food off and that’s pretty much about it.

We started off with an order of cha gio. I got the bahn cuon for dinner and my sister got the large special pho. We also ordered hot tea which didn’t get delivered to us till right before the meal. We waited an hour for our food to be made. Tables that ordered after us got food before us. There is truly no method to their madness at this restaurant.

The cha gio was finally dropped off. The flavor of the egg rolls were good but they were cold. Fried and just left sitting in the back. My bahn cuon was dropped off and I was so disappointed. I had to laugh cause of the disappointment. They were so tiny! All noodle and hardly any filling. They did not look the what was pictured on their menu. I can’t even describe how small these things were. I would say they are comparable to veggie egg roll from Panda but not as girthy. It took me about 3 minutes to eat and I was done. I did come for the pho so my sister gave me a small bowl of hers. The pho was just as disappointing as well. No flavor to the broth. You couldn’t smell or taste the aromatics of the broth. The noodles were over cooked. I can’t believe I stressed about coming to this joint just to be disappointed.

I took Nick’s word only to find out that this joint is not it. I can tell you that Pho Salt Lake and La Cai pushed out great bowls of pho. It’s cool that I got to mark this joint off my list but the service wasn’t there. The food wasn’t there. And the food wasn’t worth the hour wait.

Pho Tay Ho is an unpretentious family-owned, family-run restaurant with amazing home-cooked Vietnamese food at equally amazing low prices. The bowl of pho I had there this evening is one of the best I’ve ever had, rivaling the home-cooked pho my Vietnamese friends who introduced me to their nation’s cuisine in the mid-1970s used to make. I chose beef flank and steak, and asked for a small bowl and not a large one.The size was just right, and I loved that the accompaniments included not just slices of lime, jalapeńo, bean sprouts, and basil, but the bowl itself had cilantro and thinly sliced onion in it. It was superlative, with a rich, well-made broth. We could see the elderly lady who does the cooking in the kitchen. The egg rolls were equally wonderful and very obviously made in house. The restaurant is a repurposed one-story house, and furnishings are modest, but none of that matters when the food is so good.

The shop is located in a small home turned noodle shop. Having an “at home” vibe. The women running the shop make the service quick as possible while allowing you a moment to process where you’re at. Cutlery was self service.
Food is authentic in a way that can only be made by the people working there. Toppings were generous but easy to eat and enjoy (nothing was chewy or tough). We enjoyed a iced lime tea which was absolutely refreshing during the unusually warm Utah winter.
Overall this place is a must for those who are familiar with Vietnamese food and enjoy it. You will not miss your money when finishing a meal here.

First time coming here and fell in love. The owner is super sweet, but you’ll stay for the food. I’m not sure what she puts in the chili oil but I’m sure it could make a cardboard box taste great. The spring rolls, the pho, everything was incredible. What are you waiting for?

Nice little family owned restaurant, food is amazing.

They make you write your own order down, severe language barrier.

Soup base is great for the House special. The quantity of the noodles, meat, and the side vegetables were on the smaller side. Self serve for the utensils and parking is hard to find. The menu from the QR code is like your Pho 101. Explains the Pho in great detail short of giving you a history lesson.

I recommend this place for the House Special soup.

First day in Salt Lake City and had to tried a pho place in town. Saw the reviews and also a person I was traveling with recommended this place. The location looks like a residential area even the place looked like a house. The place felt homey and you can tell by the people who runs this is a family own. This established is like a restaurant/home. Lots of people were dining here as well.

Pho definitely taste like homemade and you can order in a small, medium, or large. I order a #1 in a size small which is plentiful since I was also tired and not up to eat more like I usually do. It’s very tasty, broth is clear and flavorful. Good amount of meat, noodles and herbs.

Pho real, this is so tasty and good.
