The restaurant has a very cozy feel to it though, which I’m sure a lot would find appealing.
I have lived in a developing nation. I am a traveler, and not a picky one. I have bounced around less than stellar hostels in Latin America, fielded the hole-in-the-ground toilets of less developed countries. Many crusty dive bar bathrooms have seen my relieved face on a late night.
When I entered the bathroom of this establishment, I almost regurgitated my delicious pho (with the works, I love tripe). Before even entering, the door handle was brown around the edges. “Okay,” I tell myself, “they haven’t wiped down the paint in a while. No big deal, I’ll be washing my hands anyways.” But what awaited me inside was so horrifying, so blood-curdling, I still haven’t forgotten it weeks later. The wall near the toilet was spattered with mysterious brown liquids. The area around the toilet handle had what I can only describe as brown streaky fingerprints around it, which were replicated around the inner door handle. The toilet was speckled with a variety of liquids. Everything had a base level of yellowish grime, including the public bidet (was not feeling brave enough to use it, if you were wondering).
I conducted my business atop layers of toilet paper, when I went to wash my hands, I realized there were no paper towels. Usually a minor inconvenience, but the suspicious colors around the faucet handle and door knob made me suspicious that touching them without a barrier would undo my attempts at hygiene. I used wads of toilet paper instead, but it was just the cherry on top.
I cannot return, and it makes me so sad because the pho is really very tasty. I beg you pho 888: please douse the bathrooms in bleach so I may return. I just cannot stop thinking about what else I may not be seeing that is in that state of hygiene.
I don’t think I took enough photos to capture it, but I hope I have painted a picture.
The pho is the star of the menu, with a rich and flavorful broth that’s clear yet packed with depth. Generous portions of tender beef slices complement the aromatic broth, garnished with fresh green onions and cilantro, enhancing each sip and bite. The noodles are cooked to perfection, with a firm yet tender texture that pairs well with the broth. If you’re a pho enthusiast, this spot is a must-try for the depth of flavor they manage to infuse into each bowl.
The shrimp spring rolls are fresh and tightly wrapped, served with a savory peanut dipping sauce that adds a nutty, slightly sweet element to each bite. They’re a refreshing start to the meal and show a nice balance of textures with the soft rice paper, crunchy veggies, and tender shrimp.
Overall, Pho 888 delivers an excellent Vietnamese dining experience with well-executed dishes and generous portions. This spot is a gem for anyone looking for comforting, authentic pho in the Uptown area.
– Pho Tai: I’d say this is probably among the best pho I’ve had thus far in Chicago; the broth is just so flavorful, savory, and aromatic, and the noodles are cooked to the perfect texture.
– Banh Mi with Grilled Pork: Would totally recommend the banh mis here; the bread is warm, flaky, and delicious with the perfect amount of sauce and veggies. The grilled pork is a classic, and the meat is nicely cooked and full of flavor.
– Banh Mi with Shredded Pork Skins: The pork skin provided great textures and unique flavors; another awesome choice of banh mi to order.
– Bun Bo Hue: I personally liked the pho better, but this broth is spicy and flavorful, and the meats and other ingredients add to the overall heartiness of this classic dish.
– Banh hoi tom thit nuong with pork (fine vermicelli mats with BBQ shrimp and pork): These build your own spring rolls are consistently among my favorite Vietnamese dishes. The BBQ shrimp and pork here are grilled wonderfully, and the fresh veggies and rice noodles create a light, fresh, balanced flavor. There was a little too much rice noodle and not enough meat for the rolls though, so we had a quite a bit of rice noodles left at the end. But they were delicious when soaked in the nuoc cham sauce.
The total with tip came out to $23 per person, which isn’t bad, considering we ordered a lot of food and were all very full and satisfied afterwards. The prices are pretty standard relative to other restaurants in Argyle.

When the food finally arrived, the table and utensils were dirty, which completely ruined our appetite. The dishes themselves tasted awful, like they were thrown together with no care at all. Honestly, the whole experience made us feel like we were being served leftovers for free rather than paying customers.
I would not recommend this place to anyone unless you enjoy bad service, long waits, and disappointing food. Definitely not coming back.
