My stepfather (I use “step” only for clarity) has family in New Kensington, and every Thanksgiving his side of the family gathers there. Whenever we were in town, Phillippi’s was always a must for him, specifically for the Birdville pie. For years, Thanksgiving schedules meant I spent the holiday with my paternal side of the family instead, so it wasn’t until later in life, my forties, that I finally attended my first Thanksgiving with my stepdad’s family.
I’m glad I did, because otherwise I might never have experienced a Birdville pie (or more importantly, time with family I had heard so much about).
At first glance, someone might say it’s just American cheese on a thin crust, and maybe that’s not entirely wrong. But anyone who knows pizza knows that the magic is in the sauce, and the sauce here is what makes it work. It’s flavorful, comforting, and pairs perfectly with the thin crust and cheese that go right to the edge. There’s no wasted crust here. It’s easy, and very satisfying, to eat the whole thing (perhaps a little too easy, aherm).
On my most recent visit, I paired it with an IC Light, bottled, which felt exactly right. The atmosphere is what really seals it for me though. Knowing this is a place my stepdad went to as a kid, and still goes to today, gives it a kind of meaning you can’t manufacture. It makes every visit feel personal.
My daughter ordered the chicken tenders, and they genuinely surprised me. The seasoning reminded me of a place we used to have in Steelton called Mueller’s Chicken, which, to this day, is some of the best-tasting chicken I’ve ever had (though has been long closed unfortunately). The flavor profile was close enough that if this were a pressure-fried half chicken, I would have sworn I was eating Mueller’s again. If that seasoning is made in-house, it’s something special.
I’m really looking forward to many more pizzas here with my stepdad. Phillippi’s isn’t trying to be trendy or reinvent anything. It’s just being exactly what it has always been, and that’s more than enough.
Only bad thing about our experience was the “family dining”experience took a little to far we noticed a girl in the bar with her child he couldn’t be no more then 3-5 years old, as she was taking shots and dripping some of the alcohol
on the poor child’s head as he is swinging a hanger around and running up and down the bar area as customers are coming to pick up food. We thought that was a little odd for a child to be at a bar they could have opted to sit on the restaurant side instead of the bar side. Only downside to our visit.
Everything else was amazing and we will definitely be returning for more pizza and soup.
Keep up the great service and even better food!
We have returned for breakfast, was good. Biscuits were kind of crunchy and the gravy was thick, chunky and savory. French toast ok, maybe a little too soft or mushy in the middle. It would also be nice if there was a real maple syrup option instead of the imitation high fructose corn syrup packets.
