Don’t go by its look. It might appear old and shady, but underneath there’s a hidden gem. If you are craving for a true ‘southern BBQ’, this is the right spot for you. It’s a small counter, where you need to place your order. Once done they will call/ announce. Though it’s primarily a take out counter, there are outside chair- tables or an arena (shaded) with some picnic benches ( with fan and old TV sets). Try the briskets, the hamburger steak, the ribs, the catfishes with hush puppies. As a side there are many options. All the food quality is good, freshly made with good ingredients. They will take time and serve piping hot. Give it a try, you would thank me later.

I really wanted to like this place, as I wanted to support a local Black-owned business.
We went a few weeks ago and had a bad experience, but thought it might have just been a bad night. No, it’s just not good.
Last time, I was the only person there, and the food (a catfish plate) took about 20 minutes to come out. The sweet tea had a bug in the bottom of the cup (discovered after drinking all of the tea ), and the side consisted of literally 3 small onion rings. The food was okay – not the best, but it was alright. Not worth the price for the amount.
This time, I waited for literally an hour (from 6:03 until 7:05). The worst part is that no workers are wearing gloves or masks at all during a pandemic. Starkville currently has a city-wide mask mandate. No customers were social distancing at all, and many were not wearing a mask.
The side orders for both plates were wrong. The fried green tomatoes were actually red tomatoes and soaking wet with oil.
The workers were also incredibly rude both times – they act like you’re bothering them by ordering food.
Tl;dr: I wouldn’t recommend eating here. The food isn’t very good and you’re risking your health by eating it.

I love this place. Simple homemade food. I try to sneak away from my families when I am in town. I have tried several different items on the menu. Tonight was the catfish, which is hard to find up north. It’s light and cruchy…I look forward to my trip this winter down here.

Fresh made southern style BBQ , good for carrying out, especially when you seek for a low cost option. The lady at the counter is not that welcoming I would say. They gave us ‘sweet tea’ as the drink for the combo meal , without even asking for option !

Ribs were good. I thought the sauce was missing a little something. I believe they would have been better without the sauce. But, I say a of that knowing everyone is different about BBQ and, someone else may think it is the best sauce in the world. I do suggest that you try it. I will be eating there again. Mostly due to the catfish. It was very good. I personally would prefer a tad bit more pepper in the batter but, it was not a deal breaker. Overall, I was very happy with the two sandwiches (I was just sampling it for the first time) I got. Especially for the price.

Good BBQ and sides. Fried green tomatoes and okra was good. BBQ had good flavor.

The food was inexpensive and very very tasty. They primarily serve grilled meat: steak, barbeque, catfish, chicken wings, pork chops, ribs…. It is excellent. The sides are pretty good but not as good as the meat, which is stellar. The guys there are funny and create a lot of character for the place. The seating is outdoor but under cover and has a cool vibe. Loved it.

Nice staff, fairly quick, food tasted passable, nothing spectacular.
Meats are obviously cooked far in advance and refrigerated or frozen. I got a half chicken that was cold in the middle. The legs and wings off it were okay but the breast was super dry, because thats what happens when you reheat meat.
I am sure its fine if you catch it fresh but it was disappointing.

The hamburgers are the best in town and the pulled pork is some of the best I’ve ever eaten anywhere. I have been eating at Petty’s since 2002 and the quality of their food has been consistent throughout the years. Also, try the snout. It’s best described as a cross between cracklings and pulled pork. Great job Petty’s!
