August 25–We tried Petit Coquin, a French restaurant in Southtown that features a prix fixe menu, on a Thursday night after work. At first glance the restaurant appears minimalist, if not underwhelming—that is until looking at the extensive wine menu and tasting the food. I love French food and it was good, salty, and authentic. We each got the different options on the prix fixe menu ($65/person) and shared them.
The setting is intimate, with only a handful of tables, and the service both friendly and attentive. Reservations are recommended, if not required, and often fill up quickly weeks in advance on Tock, for good cause.

The food was amazing, service was very kind and attentive, and the atmosphere is very nice as well! My boyfriend and I got two different items so we could try each other’s food. They had the pork shoulder and chicken. It’s a 4 course based menu and everything was very flavorful and delicious! Staff was very friendly and knowledgeable if we had any questions. Would definitely go again!

Very special meal. Everything was delicious and beautifully prepared. The vegetables were flavorful and stood out even against wonderful proteins. Unique for a restaurant experience because it offers few choices in a simple menu with complex flavors. You show up and trust what Chef Max has prepared for the night. The wine list was well paired with his menu and there was a depth of options in a variety of pricepoints. Great wine, great food ,simple uncomplicated environment . The night we were there Chef Max and Sommelier Carenn did all parts of service . It is very intimate and feels more like a French neighborhood spot than a restaurant in San Antonio. We were a party of 6 had the table for the night a nice change from many recent experiences of being advised I had 90min for my party etc.

Wonderful meal of lentils and sausage. Steak with roasted eggplant and potatoes with sauce bernaise. Services was friendly, efficient and prompt. Prix fixe meal was reasonably priced. Recommend the addition of the house pâté to begin. Martini & Negroni cocktails were excellent. Wine list is one of the most comprehensive and unique in San Antonio. Enthusiastically recommended for a superb meal!

Menu changes every week or two from the sound of things so don’t necessarily expect to get whatever might be in the menu section on Google, but you can definitely expect something delicious!
The sauces on the dishes I had were fantastic, not to mention they’ve a good wine selection as well. The team here have got something special going on. Highly recommend.

Such a special place in San Antonio. The food is fantastic and every course exceeded expectations. The service is exceptional, Carenn was incredibly helpful finding the perfect wine (she’s an expert!) and Max walked us through the courses elevating the experience. I am a transplant from New York City, and have been hard-pressed to find a such a balanced selection of high quality food and natural wine since moving to San Antonio 5 years ago, but this is it. While the food was well prepared, it was over-priced for a pretty standard meal. If I was just grading the food, I would give it a 4 because it was cooked well but nothing unique. The oeuf mayo was way better than expected but the rest of the dishes were just solid.
However, I took offense to what I felt was an UNACCEPTABLE level of service for a restaurant of this caliber, especially when they only serve 24 guests. In particular, our waitress was inattentive, inhospitable, and frankly rude throughout the meal.
One of many happenings that stood out to me was when we were asking about the menu. Our meal had a cheese option as our final dessert course, and our table was curious about what kind of cheeses to expect and whether they might be sweet or more savory. When we asked about whether the cheeses were normal cheeses or if they were more dessert-like, our waitress bluntly responded, “The French eat cheese for dessert.” To clarify further I asked, “Oh we’re asking if the cheeses are sweet or if they’re like more normal savory cheeses.” To which she condescendingly responded, “There’s 2 cheeses and bread.” Not the most helpful response. My table was honestly just shocked that we couldn’t get a straight answer to such a simple question. She was similarly blunt and unhelpful when asked about what glasses of wine they had, since there was no wine list for individual glasses. She simply said there were red, white, etc., which did not help in choosing a wine to match with our meal. When we asked for any recommendation to pair with our meal, she said, “Well, that depends on what you like…white is good with chicken and the red isn’t overpowering.” Well…duh. But not sharing a name, grape varietal, region, etc., doesn’t help at all and the wine we ordered definitely didn’t pair well with the chicken.
Throughout the meal, we had to refill our own water by hand (fine but refilling our water is pretty basic), our waitress never asked us about our meal, never came to refill our water carafe so we had to flag her down, didn’t wipe the table between courses even after she spilled water on our table, and lacked basic etiquette (saying excuse me, thank you for coming in, pardon me when reaching through us, etc). Sure, this can be nitpicking but I think the level of service we received for a high end meal is unacceptable.
The ambience was very dark and hard to see (maybe the waitress didn’t even see the water she spilled), and the music was quite loud and half our table couldn’t hear the waitress.
The food was solid but not good enough to get around the annoyance of such poor service.

The place is totally overrated and overpriced. The menu is not advertised so you show up without knowing your options. On the day we went, the option was beef steak or lamb! No fish or vegetarian option. The lamb was really bad. I took a bite from my friend’s plate and had to spit it out! My steak was good but the mushroom very lonely! The rice pudding did not taste like rice pudding. Service was OK but not special. The place looks like a dump. Best thing was the bread! For French cuisine and atmosphere, I recommend Outlaw Kitchen or Mon Chouchou. Skip this one. (PS I am French! and a foodie!)

Food was good, nothing stood out as great except for the pate (which was an additional $20). At $65 per person, I would say its a good value.
There was no art or any decoration, so it kind of felt like we were in a pop up. Just blank white walls with white tablecloths. Service was fine, there are only three people working there.
Where this place really misses for me is the wine. The cheapest bottle is $60. We looked it up and it’s a $30 bottle of wine, so a $30 mark up, which feels absurd for the level of restaurant this is.
Probably won’t return, but not a terrible night or anything.
