unfortunately, the experience left me feeling a bit underwhelmed. While the establishment itself is decent and the atmosphere is acceptable, the overall value proposition doesn’t quite hit the mark.
The biggest letdown was the flavor profile. I went in with high expectations, but the dishes were surprisingly muted. Every bite felt like it was missing that signature “punch” or seasoning that makes a meal memorable. It wasn’t bad, just strictly “okay.”
Service was another pain point. We faced a significant wait time before our food arrived. While I appreciate that the kitchen serves the food piping hot—and I do mean steaming—it felt like a small consolation after sitting for so long.
When the plates finally landed, the portion sizes were disappointing. Given the premium price point, I expected a more substantial meal. Paying a bit extra is fine when the quality or quantity justifies it, but here, the math just didn’t add up.
The saving dish is the yuzo cheesecake it was so ono.
It’s a passable spot if you aren’t in a rush, but for the price and the wait, I was hoping for much more flavor and better value.

My daughter absolutely loved her pasta. She said she wants to take Daddy here. My teriyaki beef meal was good but very sparse for the price. Service was great, though. And our meal came out quickly. Overall, I agree with my daughter and would come back with my husband.

A popular place to eat. Japanese style portions, fast and friendly service. Don’t go if you’re hungry. Might be a good restaurant in Japan, but with Hawaii eat till you’re tired appetite it doesn’t reflect the culture. I ordered a steak and chicken combo. 4 large pieces of each with rice, green beans, corn and mushrooms. $32 plus $2 for each add on. I came out hungry and it’s like Raising Cane’s a once in a lifetime experience. Small dinning room hence the line. Food comes out fast and sizzling.

I was surprised to see they opened a Pepper Lunch here in Hawaii, conveniently located at Moanalua Shopping Center. They have a lot of options for different tastes and dietary needs, but my Wife and I decided on the classic Pepper Rice.
We were greeted warmly and we ordered at the kiosk, the food arrived immediately and the staff asked if we were familiar with how to mix the rice, which is good for first-timers. Everything was authentic to the Japanese original, which makes me very happy.
If you’re missing the Pepper Lunch in Japan or looking for a simple but satisfying and pretty inexpensive meal, I highly recommend trying it out. ☺️

Pepper lunch is a one of a kind type of restaurant on the island. I know they are all over Asia but this one is the first on the island. I would describe it as a DIY tepanyaki. You get rice and different sides you get to choose from along with a few choices of a protein or a vegetarian option. The beef was my favorite as it came raw and cooked to perfection on the soldering skillet. The chicken was okay as it was precooked and came out a bit dry. Overall pepper lunch is an amazing experience and good food.

Pepper Lunch has been a long time want for me in Hawaii, but they’ve only just come since last year. The wait was worth it though. This is my second time coming (got a coupon for doing their survey from the touch screen menu!), and this time I got a regular beef plate with curry sauce and carrots (they also have curry sets too) while my sister got the kimchi beef with mushrooms and green beans, which is what I got last time.
Everything continues to be excellent, from the fast service to the tastiness of the food. I’ll be coming back for more, surely…

Pepper Lunch was — my amazing girlfriend recommended it and she absolutely nailed it.
I ordered the Jumbo Pepper Beef and added egg, onions, and green peppers, and it was incredible. Everything comes out sizzling hot on the iron plate, and cooking it yourself makes the whole experience even better. The beef was tender and flavorful, the veggies added the perfect crunch, and mixing in the egg at the end tied everything together perfectly.
Fast service, great portions, and top-tier flavor. This is hands down one of the most satisfying meals I’ve had in a while. We’ll definitely be coming back. Highly recommend.

Amazing! Just as good as the ones in Japan. Service was friendly and efficient, food was delicious and came out quickly. I ordered the kimchi beef rice with cheese and an egg. Wife had the beef rice with egg and garlic. Loved them both and we will be back!

The portion sizing and relative pricing outrageous like a upper class dine in restaurant. Hey there’s a ruby Tuesday across the street but they are competing with fast foods like taco bell, BBQ, sand with shop.
The food is still cooking in the heavy iron plates and almost meats are raw so there is a food warning on the menu.
I chose pasta versus the popular rice dishes and the drink is what I really wanted to try which was like a soda based juice
No take out available yet which I’m sure will be a big hit short term.
