Their chicken soup was excellent. I added a little rice from the buffet and a squeeze of lime and it hit the spot. They offer horchata as a drink option. Refills on that are not included, but fountain drink refills are.
They also have a small dessert and fruit section with fresh fruit, pudding, different salads, and delicious buñuelos. If you ask, they will even bring out chocolate dipping sauce for your strawberries.
The one thing I wish they had were labels or small descriptions by each item, maybe on the side or above the guard. It was the only part that slowed me down. The good thing is that their team members are quick to help and happy to explain anything you are unsure about, so there is still a very easy workaround.
The service was great, the restaurant was clean, and the buffet stayed stocked the whole time. The atmosphere was calm, and I was able to get what I needed without feeling rushed. I enjoyed it so much that I am taking my whole family back.
It is a smaller buffet, so keep that in mind, but for the price, it is an amazing value. If you are in Hickory Hills between 10 and 3, it is definitely worth checking out.
we were heading back home to Michigan, traveling out of state…ordering two entrees to have for dinner: 1.) Steak taco dinner on flour tortillas – (due to “corn” allergy)
2.) Enchilada dinner on “flour” tortillas – due to corn allergy and a container of refried beans. The young lady who took the order was very nice, she had also asked me what type of taco shell..” corn or flour” which I specified “Flour” however she rang it up under the server “Edgar”. He came to the counter said ” an order of beans” and handed me the container of beans in a bag at the counter. I said to him ” we will just wait here – we ordered two dinners too”. He was very unpleasant…he had no clue as to what I was talking about…the young lady intervened and explained to him in Spanish what we had ordered two entrees; that was the ” To-Go” order being worked on. He went back toward the kitchen. A few minutes later he brought out the two entrees, bagged up in a plastic bag. I went to their empty table and attempted to check them. The enchiladas were covered in red sauce which was expected but I could not see the tortillas used… The other entree was the steak tacos…all 3 were wrapped up neatly – so I didn’t want to mess them up since we had over a 100 miles to drive before we were to get home and reheat the entrees and eat them, so I figured everything was fine. This meal cost us a little over $50.00 dollars….a simple to-go order.
To no avail, when we arrived at home, I attempted to plate the food to reheat it. Upon doing so, When I attempted to unwrap the tacos individually did I find everything on broken up corn tortilla shells. Again, we are allergic to “corn”….that’s why I specified “FLOUR” tortillas. So I tried to pick out and salvage any part of the meat , and cheese possible…what a disaster!!! The steak tacos were terrible, hardly any meat. .not alot to pick out ..and all fat and grizzle. There wasn’t any lettuce put on the tacos, but a hand full was put at the end of the enchiladas?! The tomatoes were poorly diced- more like a few chunks? The only good part of the food was the container of beans I ordered separately in addition to the entrees. So I called the restaurant to let them know that this was a huge mistake, as allergic reactions can be ‘fatal’. As I was explaining what happened to the man who answered, he decided to hang up on me?! WRONG MOVE !!! That was uncalled for..and untollerable! Food allergies should be taken seriously. Needless to say, the entrees ended up in the garbage.. It was “GARBAGE”-“SLOP”! This was the worse food we have ever purchased from Pepe’s and the last. We use to frequent this restaurant often in the past, as we had lived in the area. Every time we’ve come through Illinois we stop at Pepe’s to get food to take home, either the countryside location or Hickory Hills…whatever is more convenient at that time. Since Countrysides misfortune several months ago, they hadn’t been able to recover, so we chose to come back to Hickory Hills. What a mistake!!! This location has ‘some’ very unbelievably careless, incompetant, ignorant, uneducated employees! “NEVER AGAIN AT MY EXPENSE PHYSICALLY AS WELL AS FINANCIALLY!”
