Was here for the first time to meet up with a very good friend, and we fell in love!

The location is gorgeous, the food is delicious, and the staff is lovely! Our server was Brandi and she was amazing! Brandi was the perfect amount of friendly, polite, genuine — and we always had everything we needed! Having waitresses before myself, you can really notice quality service, and Brandi had it!

I was so happy to get the Mahi Mahi that was on special (only critique here is that the fish was ever so slightly dry, could have been cooked 1-2 minutes less), and the Mac & Cheese and asparagus it came with were also divine (thanks to a lemon herb butter)! Overall, I was impressed with the menu selection, lots of options. We shared the key lime pie and had about 3 drinks each. The fact that you can get beer from local breweries was so lovely! Top it off with getting to leave the deck outside and sitting right next to the river… what could be more perfect?

Now on to the best part for me personally, the historical aspects! I am originally from PA and I moved to Germany roughly 6 years ago. I was so pleased to see historical info about the tavern all around, and it was comforting to see touches of my new home, here at my old home. I appreciate that they keep the old German menu and other reminders of the tavern’s origin! A train even chugged along within the first few minutes of us sitting down.

Not only does the tavern itself boast nods to German culture, they remembered what’s important: the beer! I really had to hold myself back from getting a Warsteiner (I never see this in PA, and was so pleased they have it along with Münchener Bier), but I was happy to get a local brewery’s Kölsch instead! 🙂

Ich habe mich echt zuhause gefühlt! I will definitely be bringing my German partner with next time! Now we just have to come in winter instead of summer to really put the “German-inspired dishes” to the test! Gerne gerne wieder!

Vielen Dank, und bis zum nächstes Mal!

Gorgeous restaurant along the river with beautiful outside seating. We stopped around 3pm so we ordered handheld sandwiches. The Minorcan Mike’s Chicken Sandwich and the Fish Reuben. They were both very good but we both thought the chicken sandwich was over the top.

A great experience. Celebrated my sister and brother-in-law’s 50th wedding anniversary here. Incredible staff, food, service, you name it. All set in a beautiful location and historic building.

Went to have an early dinner with number one daughter. Amazing staff, meal was great and prices were terrific. If you find yourself selves traveling the Susquehanna River basin sitting all the wonderful towns along the way. You HAVE to stop at Penn’s Tavern. Didn’t take pictures of food. But the owners treat you like family. Make sure you check all the boxes and visit them. You may want to call ahead for a reservation. They filled up fast….I wonder why???

The ambience was nice. The patrons were friendly. Our french fry’s and wraps were slightly warm/cold. The waitstaff were pleasant, but dropped off the food and did not return until she had the bill. Judy mentioned her displeasure and the waitress took 50% off her meal.

Our waitress, Emma, was exceptional. The atmosphere dining on the patio beside the lovely Susquehanna River can’t be beat. We’re always impressed by the owner/operator, Liz Mertz, who is seen all about the establishment inside and out doing whatever is needed. You can tell that it’s a true labor of love for her with a lovely smile and an outgoing personality ensuring that her guests are having a great experience. The food and drinks were delicious and the prices are reasonable. Definitely have a mule to drink and the fries with beer cheese and bacon appetizer. We didn’t stay for the live music which was to start on the patio at 5:30PM but the deck was filling up fast with diners when we departed. It’s a must stop every time I’m in the area visiting from the South.

TLDR: Amazing atmosphere, with good service, but only okay food.

Atmosphere
Wow what a really nice spot on the river in a really cozy building. It’s like teleporting back in time. I absolutely loved the interior. I do want to note that the interior had a HUGE fly problem that docks it a star, which is very unfortunate in this category.

Service
Very nice waitress, who got us what we need but what knocks it back for me is the time it took to take our orders on what appeared to be a slow evening.

Food
I’m very mixed on this because the nachos and brussel sprouts were pretty darn good for the appetizers. Unfortunately, the main courses were severely under seasoned and not cooked to standard. I got the my mother and I got the prime rib, and my brother got the mahi mahi fish special. For the price of the prime rib I was left displeased as it lacked any flavor at all and was a huge let down. The mahi mahi suffered a similar problem when I tasted it, though the tropical rice that came with it was pretty good. Food wise, not worth many of the prices for the overall flavor and quality I’m afraid.

It’s a neat place to go, just don’t go there expecting something that will blow you away.

One word, Phenomenal. Our group of six loved each entrée and appetizer. The beer cheese was the best we’ve ever had and The seafood Nachos were excellent. The most notable meals were the Lobster roll, Ribeye, and the Fish Ruben. All fantastic portions and taste. The cheesecake is Awesome. We have driven an hour to dine here and will continue too. The prices are much more than reasonable for the type of food and amount. We even got the chance to meet the owner and have a great conversation.

Pleasant drive up from the DC area to join a family gathering for lunch and a few birthdays. Penns Tavern had long been a family favorite, but I had not been in all the years I’d lived in that area. Now, I’ve enjoyed visiting twice in just the last few months. Very charming building, plenty of great menu selections. From nice salads, savory burgers, chicken dishes, and seasoned fries (you can also ask for unseasoned). Our larger group was seated in the back room with a cozy stone fireplace, beautiful wide plank wooden floors, and windows overlooking the Susquehanna River. Looking forward to coming back again and enjoying the other sections inside and outside. I heard they also get live music and have nice outdoor seating as well.
