We were looking for a place to meet for our annual Christmas family get together and wanted to keep it in the same town while trying something new. Penuku Japanese Hibachi Grill showed up as an option with mostly strong reviews, even though many of them were older. That made it a gamble, but we decided to give it a try.
When I first pulled up, I honestly questioned if we were at the right place. The outside does not look inviting and feels easy to pass by. Once inside, that impression changed quickly. The restaurant was clean, well-kept for an older building, and the staff was very friendly and welcoming.
The food was the real highlight. We ordered several sushi rolls to sample different options along with a few appetizers. The crab rangoons were not my favorite, but my teenage daughter liked them, which counts for something. Some of us ordered hibachi meals while others went with bento boxes, and everything came out fresh and full of flavor.
One downside of the bento box is that you have to choose between soup and salad instead of getting both, as many similar places include. That said, Penuku includes fried rice, which many bento boxes do not, and the selection of items was generous. The chicken was slightly overcooked, but still decent, and the vegetables, rice, sushi, and hibachi items were all very good for a smaller hibachi grill in the area.
For anyone new or wondering, this is not a cook in front of you hibachi setup. The food is prepared in the kitchen, but that should not stop you from trying it. We all left satisfied, including a few of us who are very selective eaters. Overall, Penuku was a solid choice and a place we would return to.
Price is a bit steep, I feel, but overall the quality is great.

Overall, this was a good experience. The food was ok, we had steak Hibachi, with fried rice and vegetables. I have had better, but I have also had worse. The waitress was attentive, and the prices were reasonable.
Plus side is the crab Rangoons. This is a must.
If I am ever back in the area, I would be willing to eat there again.

Wonderful food, service and portions! The server was so nice and there was enough food to take home for dinner the next night. I recommend the Honey Chicken and Shrimp Bento Box.

Love Peniku!!! The choices are endless and well prepared. The staff is warm and welcoming. Hibachi, sushi, tempura all served hot and fresh. You won’t be disappointed.

Wow!! We went with some friends for a Saturday night outing and were really impressed with this place!I wish I could remember to take pictures more often. The food was very well prepared and delicious, the sushi was made fresh and delicious. The service staff was as friendly and helpful as possible. We loved it and will be back.A rel gem.
So we went back again I was craving Sushi, I had a 3 roll plate. Boston roll,yummy roll ,and Salmon roll.
It took a little time to get it I was served 5 minutes later than my wife but I can over look that they were busy. The sushi was as good as any I have had in KC area.
I think I will be going south for great sushi and Japanese steak house style food way more often.

I’m used to big city fancy sushi and hibachi at the grill table…I was quite skeptical. But man was I impressed! I was part of a large group. The service was fast and friendly! My Philly roll was very fresh! I ordered the steak hibachi and it was so flavorful and TENDER! My mouth is watering all over again from thinking about it!
