Penelope’s Vegan Taqueria is hands down one of the best spots in Chicago — vegan or not. The food was absolutely incredible, and the experience was made even better by Michelle’s amazing service. She was so on point with her recommendations and made us feel completely taken care of from start to finish.
The pineapple jalapeño margarita was chef’s kiss — perfectly balanced, flavorful, and not overly tart. It had just the right amount of kick and sweetness.
The al pastor tacos and mushroom tacos were out of this world. The flavors were bold, perfectly seasoned, and honestly hard to believe they’re plant-based. The fries were bomb — crispy, flavorful, and addictive. Even the chips and salsa deserve a shoutout — the salsa was fresh, vibrant, and totally on point.
If you’re in Chicago and looking for incredible Mexican food with outstanding service, Penelope’s is a must. We’ll absolutely be back!

Food was spectacular. Delicious and portions were phenomenal. My number one pet peeve for vegan places are high prices and small portions, I was finally not disappointed here! We ordered the nachos, and taco dinner… 3 “pick your own” tacos it came with rice and beans. They had a lot of taco options and an entire Mexican menu on top of that. And yea, the whole menu is vegan, really happy with our experience, will definitely be returning to try everything else.

Stopped by on a whim on a Sunday afternoon before my Amtrak left town. Very good food, quick service, kind people, and cool decor. Will definitely be back next time I’m in Chicago!

PHENOMENAL! I am not vegan and do not ordinarily go for plant-based kitchen, but Penelope’s was distinct. Highly recommend the soy chorizo taco, margaritas, and cantarito. 10/10 happy hour. The drinks are ginormous for happy hour ($8).

Definitely worth checking out. The chimichanga and burrito were pretty good. We were looking for a little more flavor in the meat substitutes. They were very accommodating by being willing to add al pastor into the burrito, which was nice!
Will be returning for sure.

We were excited about Penelope’s Taco place coz they had an interesting vegan menu… and ordered five tacos and the strawberry horchata on the waiter’s recommendation. Unfortunately, the drink was too sweet, and most of the tacos did not live up to my expectations. I loved the chorizo one, and the soy pastor was good as well—my partner especially liked it. The chimichurri was dripping oil(not olive oil) so the taste(which was good) didn’t really matter in my annoyed state.
The Baja and chunky queso tacos were okay—we didn’t enjoy them much. Unfortunately, I wouldn’t recommend this place too highly. The restaurant is simple, and the service is quick. I wish I had tried the matcha horchata, but anyway… I’m sure it wouldn’t have been worth $7. The Starbucks matcha drink is really good, and the sweetness can be moderated, not here.
My partner felt it was a 4-star experience. I felt it wasn’t really worth the ~$40 we spent.

Wonderful service, generous portions, and incredible flavors. We were so impressed by this restaurant and I can’t wait to go back.

The best vegan tacos I’ve ever had. That helps a lot because we did a carry out order and explicitly asked if utensils and napkins were included in our order (the were not). Additionally, all the tacos were in the same container, not sure if there’s a better way to indicate by person for a carry out order.
The drinks were also… interesting. But the food made it all worth it. We’ll be back!

All vegan places that specialize in one cuisine are are usually far better than those free form vegan restaurants. And Penelope’s vegan taqueria, by focusing on Mexican cuisine and specifically taco does deliver in flavors.
The tacos, enchilada and burritos are great.
I wish they had black beans as option. They only have pinto beans. The cauliflower tacos were great. The vegan cheese in enchilada was so so.
They charge for everything including salad. We ordered chips and needed to pay more for spicy salsa.
I would go for lunch again. But it is not a great dinner place. Also I recommend ordering fewer items than you think.
