5 stars simply isn’t enough.

This restaurant was recommended to me by a family member, and I was hesitant at first since I don’t usually love fried chicken. But once I looked at the menu and saw rice cakes, I was instantly sold They are hard to find in this area unless you make them yourself or buy the dried grocery store bowls, so seeing a rice cake bowl with toppings had me ecstatic.

I ordered the rosé rice cakes since spice isn’t really for me, and when I opened it, it smelled AMAZING. I immediately took a bite while still standing at my counter I was honestly speechless. There was no spice at all, just a perfect balance of slightly sweet and savory flavors. The fish cakes were wonderful, the vegetables were heavenly, but the rice cakes were the absolute star of the show.

The texture was unreal. I am a huge texture eater, and these rice cakes had the most perfect bounce and bite, easily the best I have ever had. This bowl was a full texture masterpiece for me.

I know some people mention pricing, but the portion was very generous. At $16, it was more than worth it. I would gladly pay more for something this good.

I am so glad we have this restaurant in the area and cannot wait to try more dishes. Thank you for such a phenomenal experience. You have gained a customer for life.

This place is awesome. I’ve never seen one before and decided to stop in for lunch on a whim, and I don’t regret it one bit. The chicken is incredibly crispy and tender, and the spicy honey soy flavoring is amazing. The service was great and the attached asian market was fun to shop around while waiting for food to be ready. Definitely recommend giving it a try, you get a lot of really good food for your money.

If you’re from somewhere with good Korean fried chicken you’ll be totally disappointed. Chicken is okay but the crispy and crispy spicy are not as crispy as better Korean fried chicken chains/restaurants. And the sauce was just sort of squeezed out of a bottle onto the chicken instead of mixed around in a bowl or something to cover all the chicken. Wasn’t very good sauce either. Not to mention the chicken was totally undercooked. Also, nowhere to really sit except a thin table facing the parking lot. And way overpriced. Maybe they can get away with this in State College but please don’t think this is great Korean fried chicken. Mandu wasn’t bad though. Saved them another star deduction!

Why do I eat where the food hurts my face?!

If you’re a fellow hot-food masochist like me, this is the kind of dish that will have you both regretting your choice, and struggling with the urge to keep going even after your lips are on fire and your stomach is telling you you were full five or six bites ago.

I, personally, lost the fight with my id and kept going until it was all gone.

If you like spicy Korean food and aren’t afraid of some heat, order Pelicana’s Sweet and Spicy chicken thighs, extra crispy, level 3. If you’re a white American and show no signs of having a tempered palate, they might try to warn you off with a few comments or questions making sure you know what you’re getting into. Stick to your guns, it’s worth it.

The coating maintains its crispness, which is no small feat considering how liberally they coat the chicken chunks with their delectable sauce. And the sauce is the perfect combination of sweetness and heat that you can tell does not come from insultingly just adding capsaicin for effect. It’s actually flavorful.

Every time my son and I get this to bring home, we inevitably ask whose dumb idea it was to go with level 3 again, but then we finish each and every bite, fully cognizant of what it’s doing to us physically, mentally, and emotionally.

We’re also intentionally turning a blind eye to what tomorrow morning will bring. But, it’s worth it.

(There’s some hyperbole in this review, but honestly, not that much.)

Pelicana in State College was excellent. I was in town for work and ordered takeout— the staff was incredibly friendly, efficient, and clearly cared about the experience. Especially for a to go order.

The chicken was perfectly crispy and full of flavor, and the fried rice was super fresh. Everything was packaged well and still hot when I got back. Great food and best in class experience. Highly recommend!

If you’re here you’re here for the food because it’s phenomenal. A little on the pricier side with you spending 25+ per person, but it’s well worth it. The service is quick, with this not really being a sit down restaurant, best to take your food on the go. The atmosphere isn’t anything to write home about, but again the food is worth it. Also nextdoor you’ll find an asian market with a great selection of items. I always end up spending as much next door as I do at Pelicana.

Not a bad little place. Both Chicken items were excellent, Mochi Cheese Donut Balls were decent, Corn/Slaw good. The pickled veggies were ehhh. A little pricey & this reviewer highly recommends ordering in advance as everything is prepared fresh. 13 total seats, with a little market attached to it.

We stopped by for the first time tonight and had the crispy chicken breast. It was exceptionally crispy and very tasty, as were the side of white honey garlic sauce and the corn slaw. I’m so glad to have Pelicana at our end of town!

I also thoroughly enjoyed checking out the adjacent market while waiting for our meal. We’ll definitely be back to both soon!

TL;DR: Food seems expensive, but portion sizes, quality, and taste make up for it. Do take-out or sit in your car if you have the option.

Let’s start with the most important information, the food was excellent. Food quality and portion size makes the price worth it, in my opinion. I paid $19+ after taxes for 10 wings, but the wings were very large and very crispy.

As for the atmosphere/service, it was fine at best, the minimal seating inside is not very comfortable (metal bar stools and small counter top), and the lunch time sun beating through the front windows made it hot. This wouldn’t have been a huge problem except I had to wait a good while for my food (15-20 minutes).

We had spicy fried wings, half plain crispy spicy so very crispy, half with sauce, and grilled wings. We also got 2 spicy dumplings, beef and vegetable, sweet potato fries. Loved the spiciness. Came with small but enough corn salad and pickled radish, both a nice little extra, but not what we were there for. Both kinds of wings good in different ways, but favorite was the spicy fried, and wings were meaty and done nicely. We got several extra sauces to try, we all liked different ones better. It is a carryout place mostly, and was clean, with some chairs for those who want a quick bite there. We really enjoyed our meal, picked it up prior to PSU game, as did some people right after us, but not too busy to be fast. They said 20-25 min, and they were ready and very nice. Parking was no problem for us. We will go back.
