Eat Athens: The best Chinese restaurant in town is over 40 years old
Reviews
My wife had almond chicken and I had spicy Peking chicken.
My lunch was a mixture of warm and cool chicken. Sweet and not spicy served with rice in a puddle of liquid.
My wife’s was cold served the same way with rice in a puddle of liquid.
The egg drop soup was fine. The egg rolls were okay.
We both ordered tea which didn’t come until I asked for it.
Maybe we came on an off day. They have good reviews, we were looking forward to trying them out.
We have been coming to Peking in Athens, GA for over 30 years. From the original owners of Peter and Francis to the wonderful Christine and her late husband, the owners and operators of this restaurant have always been really great people. They are so friendly and the entire staff provides exceptional service. Speaking of service…you know a restaurant is great when you have a stable of waiters/waitresses that have been there for decades. DECADES.
Speaking of decades, I have celebrated the majority of my birthdays at this restaurant. From graduation dinners to other celebratory occasions, the answer is always clear for where we should go to eat: Peking. And a common theme from all of those dinners? We walk out of the restaurant and look to each other while saying, “that was the best meal I’ve ever had at Peking.”
While I know everyone has their own taste and opinion on dishes to get, I really don’t know what you’re doing if you’re not ordering some of their best dishes. These are their absolute best dishes and every time we order, we have at least a couple of these:
– Peking Chicken
– House Special Shrimp (when eating AT the restaurant)
– Mongolian Triple Delicacy
– Spicy Ginger Shrimp
I cannot get enough Chinese food. I’m that weirdo eating airport Chinese food at 9 in the morning. I am lucky to have traveled a fair amount, plus I’ve also lived six different states where I can promise you I have eaten enough Chinese food to feed a small army. While there are obviously other great restaurants out there (Pei Wei anyone?), Peking in Athens, GA is hands down at the top of my list for best Chinese food ever. They are consistently delicious, consistently outstanding with service, and super friendly. I cannot say enough good things about this restaurant!!!
The first issue was that the little German roach was fried and sauced -meaning he was deep in the veg (how long had he been there?) and no one noticed him at plating. The second issue was the complete lack of a reaction from the waiter when notified. Like he had seen this problem before and was more annoyed with having to remove the plate than with the fact that there was a ROACH in my lo mein. At this point, we were still going to finish our soup, but lo and behold, the soup bowls had dried food stuck in the bottoms of them when we pulled them apart. There was no manger to talk to, the waiter all but fled from us and the icky feeling I had just kept growing at the lack of cleanliness standards in the kitchen, so we just left without eating anything. I used to really enjoy Peking, but this was beyond gross and unacceptable.
