I’ve always loved this bakery and their products, but I was very disappointed with how my bread was handled today.
My bread was bagged using a bag turned inside out. After my visit, I called and was told this is their standard practice—using the outside of the bag to pick up the bread.
Because the outside of the bag had been sitting next to the register and touching surfaces, that same side ended up in contact with my bread.
This is unsanitary and unacceptable from a food safety standpoint, and unfortunately I no longer feel comfortable eating their products.

Great bakery here!
I’ve lived in Chicago for 27 years and tried many other bakeries around the area. In my honest opinion this is the best bakery in town as I’ve known this bakery for long enough. I was told by the staff that their bread and cakes are freshly made with quality ingredients and no preservatives, so safe for a kid. My little ones and friends of mine love this store too. Here is a picture that I bought today and are my favorites.
Try not to get misled by the other reviewers, I’d just like to share my experience with somebody who has never been to this bakery. Just try this store because that’s the quickest way to understand what I mean here.

We tried two slices of cake and two pastries. The cakes were absolutely amazing — so light, fluffy, and delicious! We’ll definitely be coming back for more and can’t wait to try other flavors. The pastries looked beautiful, but we weren’t big fans of the filling — it had a pudding-like texture that just wasn’t to our taste. Still, that’s a personal preference, so I’m not taking off any stars for it!

A pretty decent Japanese Bakery! I think my favorite was their Baked Cheesecake, so fluffy and creamy at the same time! Their egg sandwich was very delicious as well, along with their apple-shaped apples and cream “Ringo-chan”.

super cute bakery with a ton of bread options & cake/other pastry options at the check out! area can get a little small/cramped when busy but they have it set up very nicely so its not too overwhelming. near the end of the day they discount some of the goods, the lady checking us out was also very nice!

This is seriously one of my favorite bakeries ever. I always get different pastries, one of each, to taste and I’ve never regretted anything so far. The breads are fluffy, it is not something that you can just buy somewhere. You can taste how specially it is made.
We will definitely go back here every time we go to Mitsuwa.

Pastry House Hippo is the highlight of every Mitsuwa shopping trip. Their pastries, breads and sandwiches are out of this world. The staff are always efficient and polite, no matter how busy they are.

Great collection of savories which get sold pretty quick. Loved the triffle cake with Strawberry, Banana, Mango and Kiwi. Best part was the hot milk coffee in a can. Plain custard bun had the perfect sweetness and tasted delicious
