Service was lovely, food was great, the beef brisket and mac n cheese, the best bits by miles, portions were average but i can’t complain at £37 for two people to eat a main course. The other meats werent as good as the brisket, (chicken thighs and turkey), soft drinks, too expensive, £4.50 for a tin of coke?
2 people, 1 sharing starter, 1 sharing platter, 2 soft drinks, £60 well spent. Would I rush back, mmmmm, me yes, my wife no. if you fancy a really well done American BBQ, go visit Pappy’s in Kendal. Just make sure you ring for a table first, its tiny.
The service was fantastic, the menu explained and the method in cooking explained which was great to hear.
The food was all cooked spot on, we had the sharing platter and wha a feast, the brisket particularly was fantastic.
Great little venue, cosy inside. You definitely need to book as was very busy.
Looked like they had lots of cocktails, and drinks on offer. I couldn’t resist a cold modelo.
Me and mybhusband ordered 5 meat platter, which we could not finish. Brisket was lovely, moist and flavourful. Fries were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Sauces are awesome here, just a slight kick, definitely will be buying theyr bbq sauce. My daughter had pulled pork tacos, she is a bit of a picky eater, but she loved it so much, she ate it all!
Definitely recommend to come and try their smoked meats, you will have lunch for next day anyway!
It was my mother in laws 60th birthday and the staff had decorated the table with balloons and a bouquet of flowers which we thought was a such a lovely touch.
So friendly and authentic! We will definitely be returning! Thank you so much!
When asking if we could move to the Saturday I was told I would have to cancel my Friday reservation (which we had paid a deposit of £30) and to rebook for the Saturday.
A £60 deposit was taken in addition to the £30 I had paid for the Friday reservation, for our booking of four, which is deducted from the final bill. That said, it still felt a little steep for a small group.
The restaurant itself is VERY small, so while the atmosphere was okay, it did feel a little cramped and cosy. I’d be a little disappointed if we weren’t sat on a booth as the other seating looked rather uncomfortable.
We all ordered the Pit Master Platters (choice of 5 meats and 3 sides). When we went to choose our meats, we were told that the chef selects them instead not a problem, but it would have been nice to have that explained properly when seated, as neither of us wanted the pulled pork, when we asked if it could be removed, we were told no.
The food arrived quickly, which was great, but the portion sizes were smaller than expected compared to what we’d seen on social media. I could have easily finished a platter myself.
The brisket was lovely, but the other meats were quite dry and all had a very similar, overly smoky flavour.
I usually love mac and cheese, but this one was disappointing… no cheese sauce, just greasy pasta with a breadcrumb topping and a sprinkle of cheese.
My friend also ordered the crispy chicken tacos to share at the table, I myself did not try them. But the other members of the group stated they just tasted burnt and greasy and not really any chicken.
We’d booked after seeing the restaurant all over social media and thought it would be a fun addition to our trip to the Lakes, especially as we’re visiting Texas and Mexico later this year. The margarita was delicious, but again, on the pricey side.
I completely understand that hospitality costs are rising and small businesses have to adjust, but overall, we didn’t feel the experience justified the price. Our total bill came to £190 for four people, including a 10% discretionary service charge- which, while optional, always feels awkward to decline.
Service was friendly enough, staff checked in on us and brought extra sauces when asked. However, it did take around 15 minutes to get our bill, which felt unnecessary given how small the restaurant is.
Overall, not a terrible experience, but not one we’d rush back for either.
Thought we’d give it a go as hickories is our local smokehouse.
We found the menu selection massive, but were unsure what to have. We did also find that coming later in the evening (8-9pm), most of the options what we wanted were out of stock which was a little disappointing.
As we had never been, the waiter kindly suggested the platter which allowed us to try a bit of everything – albeit the most expensive item on the menu.
For two people, the portion size was massive however a little on the pricy side, although this was supposedly justified by the type of meat used.
I would say the brisket and the sausage were probably the best on the plate for us – we found the bowl dishes a little too stodgy and not very flavourful, and the mac and cheese was quite oily / greasy.
We found there were more “sides” on the platter to fill up on to make up for the small amount of meat which is a shame. Would prefer the other way round.
The venue is very small and recommended to only book. It was also very hot, and our service towards the end of the night was lacking – ie for clearing up and getting the bill.
Worth an experience and a try if you are a foodie, but for us this was a one time stop.
No issues whatsoever to pappys – just not quite our taste.
I always try to support small businesses and clearly this place is good at smoked meats but overall we were quite disappointed despite absolutely exceptional service from the staff.
Firstly the platter, for £37, was 3 small (yet tasty) slices of brisket, a sausage and a single small chicken thigh on the bone. This felt extremely overpriced and we felt should’ve been more like £20/£25 or just have more meat on.
The ribs again felt lacking in meat from a BBQ place.
The biggest let down was actually the Mac & Cheese – there was hardly any cheese to this dish. It was powdery & watery under the toppings, hardly any brisket in the chili and at £16.50 for the brisket Mac & Cheese this is not what you would expect.
Even if we had brought this to someone’s attention last night there wouldn’t have been suddenly a more cheesy version of the dish to serve so overall I feel like there needs to be some more attention to the food.
All that being said the cocktail my partner had was lovely and again the service was fantastic hence why we still tipped.
Although the food looks aesthetically very good I don’t feel like the price is justified by the quality overall and the quantity of meat you receive.
It’s a great little spot and although I know business costs are high, especially in the lakes, the price vs. quality and quantity here needs work.
We had the sharing platter, wings, nachos, burger, ribs & mac n cheese with brisket chilli.
Sharing platter was more than enough for 2 people. Meats are chosen for you (would prefer an option to select our own ideally but fine for first visit).
Sides of fries, slaw & mac n cheese. Came with a couple of dips bbq & mayo, 4 chunks of pickle, few slices of onion & a bun (or wrap).
Good quality meat, tasted great. Slaw was ok, son said mac n cheese a bit bland for him. Could’ve done with more pickle & onions for 2 people and maybe jalepenos or other sauces as an option.
Burger, wings & ribs very good. Pulled pork nachos were lovely.
We would go again for sure.
I’d recommend booking, as the place fills up quickly.
The beef ribs were outstanding.
We also had the sharer platter that comprised of various meats including pulled pork, chicken thighs, ham and Cumberland sausage. The upgrade to have some brisket on there is well worth it.
If you want to experience true BBQ (without a trip to the states) then this place is your best bet!
Thank you for having us
– I thought I did a good BBQ, after visiting Pappy’s it looks like I’ll have to step up my game!
Table was a little cramped so we asked to move up to the window seat which was much better and felt more private!
Loved the chilli dog!
