dining at Papi’s Taco Joint in Towson, Md. Upon entering, I asked, did they have a gluten-free menu and our wonderful waitress Jazz, who was so professional, helpful, and well informed guided me every step of the way.
Her suggestions were top-notch. My food was absolutely delicious and this is the first time in almost 7 years that I have had a fajita! The homemade gluten-free tortillas and salsa was to die for! The care and assistance given was greatly appreciated. Who do I need to talk to get Jazz a pay raise!!
If you’re looking for a gluten-free meal, where the helping are abundant and the time, attention and detail is paid to you as the customer as well your food, Then look no more Papi’s Taco Joint is 10/10
Now for the cons: The food was bland and unappetizing. My husband got the ribeye tacos on corn tortillas with a “mordita” (?) salsa. Not sure if this was supposed to be a take on a chile morita salsa, but while slightly smoky, it didn’t add substantively to the meal.
I got the chicken tortilla soup, which was extremely disappointing. Thick, mealy, with the flavor, smell, and consistency of vomit, it had little to recommend it. Luckily, there wasn’t much of it to be had. Unfortunately, that small pot (and yes, it does come in a cute little cauldron) was $9.
But the most disappointing part of the entire experience were the two cocktails we tried. As a former craft cocktail bartender from Texas, I have high standards when it comes to a bar program (not to mention Mexican food). When a bar program is part of a restaurant chain with at least four locations, one would expect it to be well-developed and robust. Plus, the drinks sounded thoughtfully crafted. Unfortunately, this was NOT the case.
I ordered the “Pina Pyre Margarita” (ghost tequila, pineapple juice, agave nectar, lime juice, fire salt rim), as it seemed like it would be a bright spirit-forward drink without much sweetness and with a little kick. My husband tried the “Tropic Thunder Margarita” (Dulce Vida pineapple jalapeno, Cruzan pineapple rum, house sour, 86 sugar sub tajin rim) as he enjoys pineapple with a hint of heat (hence the substitution of tajin for sugar rim). We were both bitterly disappointed.
The “Pina Pyre” had no heat, which was surprising for a drink made with ghost chile tequila… and was, inexplicably, cream-cloudy. I scoured the menu trying to find out if either drink had cream, but couldn’t find any indication of it. (I’m also sensitive to dairy and had a sharp stomachache after lunch.) There was also no lime flavor, no subtle sweetness from agave, and who knows what a “fire salt” rim is supposed to be… tajin, maybe? I love tajin, but the rest of the drink was a one-note cream of pineapple bomb. It was terrible.
We sent that back and ordered another of the “Tropic Thunder.” It was good of the server to make the swap out, though the original drink was left on the tab.
The replacement drink came out quite a bit cloudier than the first “Tropic Thunder,” which could have been due to a larger pour of pineapple juice, as it has a natural cloudiness… but supposedly, the “Tropic Thunder” didn’t have pineapple juice, so maybe that was the house-made sour mix. Whatever the case, the pineapple-heavy notes of the Dulce Vida and Cruzan were too much for me, so I gave the drink to my husband.
By his own admission, he’s a lightweight. Typically, he enjoys one drink and is set. In this case, however, he drank BOTH drinks and didn’t have so much as a buzz. Now, we’re not looking to get smashed, especially on a Sunday afternoon, but we both recognize and enjoy our alcohol. The fact that these drinks each cost about $10 and probably contained less than a shot of liquor is criminal and false advertising.
In short, both “cocktails” were saccharine and seemed to be made with nothing but pineapple juice. Neither seemed to contain much (if any) alcohol. There needs to be an audit of the bar program with some serious training on proper pours (please don’t free-pour, and do use your jigger!) and flavor profile combinations because these drinks may have different names and ingredients, but they all tasted like Tiki trashcan punch without the potency you’d expect from a party drink made with Everclear.
Needless to say, we won’t be back. The vibes are fabulous and it’s great that there are gluten-free and vegan menus, but overall, the food and bar program are a real miss. With prices as high as these, I’d save your money and try somewhere else.
