Continuing with our journey of eating at the 5 oldest pizza establishments.

We ate at Papa’s Tomato Pie. Established in 1912 and the oldest in New Jersey as well as in The United States.

We got there at around 11:15 am and were the first customers. The exterior and interior of this establishment looked inviting. A little dated but still very comfortable. You can’t help by noticed the Tiffany lighting inside and out.

We were greeted and welcomed as first timers. They explained their tomato pie and when questioned about their famous “mustard pie” they said it’s very popular.

Let me explain their tomato pie. They construct it with dough cheese and seasoning and top it with their tomato sauce.

While the Mustard Pie has the same ingredients and a thin layer of brown spicy mustard then topped with their tomato sauce tomato sauce.

Although inviting we elected to go with their tomato pie. While the Mustard Pie is for another day.

In addition to the tomato pie we ordered a side of meatballs and birch beer. They do not offer free refills but they are byob.

Meatballs arrived first and were good and average in taste. Probably better on a pie or sandwich .

The Tomato Pie arrived hot. It had a nice thin crust and the undercarriage had a nice char.

The pie was tasty, crispy snd cheesy with just amount of tomato sauce protecting the cheese. This made it a pleasant tasty surprise .

They say they cook the pid well done but you can request it to your liking .

Prices are competitive under $40 with tip.

Portnoy gave it an 8.6. I am giving it an 8.3. Portnoy original score.

It’s been over a week and i am beginning to have a crave as i am describing my experience .

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

We just had an amazing experience at this pizzeria. We ordered a small Caesar salad, and honestly it was more than enough for two people — incredibly fresh, full of flavor, and they definitely don’t hold back on the ingredients. Every bite felt generous and well balanced.

We also tried their famous mustard pizza with sausage, and it absolutely lived up to the hype. The thin crust is perfectly baked, light, and crispy, making it easy on the palate and the stomach while still delivering bold, delicious flavor. The combination of mustard and sausage is unique and incredibly satisfying.

What makes this place even more special is its more than 100 years of experience — you can truly taste the tradition, craftsmanship, and passion in everything they serve. This is not just pizza; it’s history and excellence on a plate.

Highly recommended — we’ll definitely be coming back!

This is easily one of the best pizzas I have had in the state of New Jersey. Very similar to Denino’s in Staten Island. Definitely a spot that you must get to.

The pizza here was genuinely great. The sauce had an decent flavor, the crust had just the right amount of crispiness, and there was absolutely no flop on the slice just how I like it. It wasn’t super shocked like an “oh my god this is great pizza.” I’ve definitely had better and I was a bit unimpressed with all the hype this place has gotten and from what I’ve heard. The only other thing that surprised me was the price. I paid $18 for a small plain pie, which feels a bit on the pricey side. Overall, pretty decent pizza, but definitely a little overpriced.

My first visit to Papa’s completely changed how I feel about pizza. The crust was perfectly thin and crisp, and the tomato sauce had just the right amount of acidity. I’d 100% come back if I were in the area again

The absolute best tomato pie in NJ. I’ve tried so many over the years and Papas always comes out on top. The crust is crispy and flavorful! The perfect amount of cheese. They don’t skimp on the sauce. Most tomato pies in the area don’t put enough on. Their sauce is the perfect balance sweet and savory. The workers are always pleasant. I drive past 3 well known places to come here.
