It’s weird, but I eat a lot of sandwiches when I’m in Pocatello. With that said, I’ve been to my fair share of chains: Subway (when people ate there), Quiznos, Jimmy John’s, etc. Over time I’ve developed a weakness for hot pastrami sandwiches and Papa Kelsey’s has them.

The atmosphere is very Italian pizzeria, but green, so be prepared for that. I actually think this place is more about pizza than subs, which is crazy, because I’ve only eaten sandwiches here.

The service is pretty standard, order at the counter, wait at the table, someone brings the food and you fill up a fountain drink. The people that work here are pretty nice considering the volume they get hit with a peak time. When I visited there were only two people working and they had a bunch of to go orders to get out.

Although, I come here for the food. This is another place that I thought I might be overly nostalgic about, imagining the food was better in my memories, but I was wrong. The food is as good as I remember. The added availability of Sun Chips at many of these places is a super bonus, and I also got an extra side of Lays.

Overall, I still don’t have any complaints about this place. I would eat here any time, and I suggest you do too.

Ordered two sandwiches, one being the pizza sub which is the only item I order for myself. I had enjoyed it for 20+ years. However over the last year and a half there have been some huge inconsistencies. It started out being little to no cheese. So I started ordering extra cheese, which didn’t change the end result. Some of the other issues were at times being over sauced making the bread very soggy which is unfortunate because their fresh bread has always been one of my favorite things. Now to address tonight’s sandwich, I was excited when I saw the bread wasn’t soggy and looked like a normal amount of cheese. Unfortunately it was extremely disappointing. Hopefully the pepperoni used on this sandwich is not a long term choice, it was rubbery and tasted liked bologna. I took one bite and immediately took the sandwich apart to remove all the pepperoni. I then had my husband, who isn’t picky try one of the pepperonis and even he thought they tasted bad. I hope some changes will be made to bring back the sandwich I had enjoyed for so many years.

I love Papa Kelsey’s! I would have given them 5 starts, but the phones mess up sometimes, & it’s a little frustrating, or they get understaffed — also a little frustrating. But it’s hard to get too frustrated, because the food is tasty, and the staff has always been friendly. And the big big plus… is that I don’t usually get heartburn from their food like I do from other pizza places. It’s a big reason why I keep coming back. Heartburn sucks.
My favorites:

Taco pizza — has got it going on!! Ask for extra beans though.

Turkey sub — also yummy for my tummy.

Spicy fries — yessir!

I will never go there again
Ordered an Italian sub and left with this. I’m not even sure what it is.
I’ve worked in restaurants, owned restaurants, and ordered Italian subs all over this country. This is not an Italian sub. Here’s some assistance.
Salt, pepper, lettuce, tomato, oregano, oil vinegar, ham, salami, and cheese. It’s really not that difficult.
I’m afraid to even eat this. What the heck is it?
Wow.

First off we ordered 4 pizzas. 3 of which were wrong. After calling the first time the employee said they needed to call a manager to figure it out. After 15 minutes of waiting called back. Then the manager said he would review video to verify they were made right and would call us back. Tacky but ok. Then after waiting another 15 called again and was told by said manager was still needing to review footage. Then finally called back after another 10 minutes and tried to say the food was made correctly. After giving up and deciding to just deal with what we got then found a really long hair baked into one of the pizzas. Will I repeat will never order from this place again!!

Ordered the pastrami and Swiss through a recommendation from an old Pocatello resident. Ended up with a sub containing half of all the mustard in the restaurant. Even after scraping the majority of it off the sub -along with coveted melted cheese and sauerkraut- I still had twice as much mustard as a sandwich should have. My friend who was dining with me ordered the regular pastrami, no extras, and got just 3 slices of pastrami. The kids got a personal pizza and the dough is so tough it’s very difficult to chew through. No silver linings, not a good stopover. Not very personable staff either. Skip it.

A Waste of Time and Money! Terribly staffed and operated. The orders take forever to complete and the quality is not worth the price or wait. The employees are almost always just standing around like they are waiting for something instead of being on task.

Oh man! I used to go to the Papa Kelsey’s in Twin Falls all of the time. Then my sisters became gluten-free. I haven’t been back since. My life hasn’t been the same.

I went to this location. At my first bite, my childhood came back. It was joyous. The fresh dough brought my innocence back in my life again. It was well worth the food. Zack signing off.
