Our group ate lunch at Papa Kayjoe’s while on a motorcycle trip through western Tennessee. I know a BBQ joint is going to be good when I can smell it before I can see it coming down the road and this was true of Papa Kayjoe’s. The “ramshackle” building and decor are perfect for the vibe. My favorite BBQ style is Memphis dry rub which they have and came recommended to me by a friendly local who was in front of me in line to order. The food came out quickly and was absolutely delicious. Instead of cornbread squares they had pancakes which looked like regular pancakes. Still delicious. My only complaint is that they didn’t have any t-shirts! I would definitely eat here again.

Love this place! I drive through Centerville a few times a year and I try to stop here for their amazing food every time!

I really enjoy their Grilled Cheese with Brisket, Ribs and their sides are a great accompaniment! Fried Okra is a particular fave!

Atmosphere is warm, charming and shows off the town. Staff is friendly and attentive!

Customer service is important! The food here is fabulous. So good that we ate there AND bought some to take home for another meal. I had the Southern Way Special, which was a cornbread pancake topped with pulled pork, topped with slaw. I did the vinegar slaw rather than mayo, and it was delicious. I think the vinegar helped the meal not to feel so heavy. My husband had ribs and bbq chicken. The chicken was fine, but the ribs were fantastic – really tender with a sweet sauce. The ambiance was cute, really eclectic, and fun. The reason it didn’t get 5 stars was because the girl at the register seemed to hate her job. She was really short with me, not friendly at all. If they had someone interested in offering a smiling face at the counter to give a good first impression, it would be beneficial for them.

Top notch BBQ joint. Ive had bbq all over TN and surrounding states and this place really stands out. Top 2 in my experience. Ribs fall off the bone, literally I couldn’t pick up the rack, it was falling apart. They just started making a unique corn bread with toasted cheese and bacon! Its unique and delicious. The staff was friendly and helpful. And from the outside look and never knowing what youll get inside a bbq joint, I was pleasantly surprised to see how clean and well put together it was inside. I can’t say enough good about this one. Def a hidden gem. Worth the detour.

If you’re ever out in Centerville, Tennessee stop here!!

The wings alone make it a 5 star stop! ⭐️

Me and my colleague both had the brisket plate. He added a brisket taco and we split an order of wings.

The chicken literally slid off the bone! The dry rub made my day!

I had white beans, vinegar slaw and cornbread. He had tater salad and baked beans. I thought I was back sitting in granny’s kitchen again!

Brisket was shredded! Sauces were great! I mixed hot with sweet. Sides were delicious! Nice portions!!

The food was ok. I expected the pork to have a smoky flavor, ordered onion rings and they were so overs cooked I couldn’t eat it. Not sure if I would go try again. Staff is really nice and allot of people seem to like it. Its just not for me.

Papa Kay Joe’s was delicious. I got the pork plate, and I got okra and corn on the side. The southern grilled cheese was also good with the curly fries. The free peanuts were awesome. I wasn’t a fan of the fried pickles, so I wouldn’t get them again. The staff was really nice as well.

Had the most delicious stuffed baked potato today with pull pork with some fried green tomatoes and corn nuggets to go with it. Definitely will be ordering it again and love the amazing service and family atmosphere. We also ordered some of the chicken wings and they were absolutely amazing. If u haven’t tried them out u honestly should. Best wings in Hickman County. My personal favorite.

After spending the early fall morning cruising the Natchez Trace Parkway south of Nashville, we navigated the winding two-lanes along and across the Duck River into the little town of Centerville. It was one of those moments that feel like you are in a movie when we pulled into the gravel parking lot under a cloudless sky. We were greeted by the official scent of autumn-sweet hardwood smoke-as we walked towards the unassuming wood-sided smokehouse.

Inside and outside, the walls are covered with a mix of barbecue, family and hometown sports memorabilia- which is pretty commonplace, but the difference is that here it feels real instead of being a cheap reproduction. In fact, some of the décor was salvaged when the original structure was gutted by a fire in 2015.

Upon entering the museum/restaurant, you place your order at the counter directly in front of you. A menu board is at the top of the wall, with a chalkboard listing daily specials beneath it. This day’s options included baby back ribs (a Friday-Saturday special) and banana pudding. These were obvious choices, and we rounded out our meal for three with a pork plate, which includes two sides and cornbread.

We took a seat at one of the small tables. Soon, our food was brought out. The ribs were a thing of beauty. These were the dry-rub ribs- they offered the choice of dry or sauced when ordering, and this was the right choice. Gigantic bark and additional rub encased tender meat that pulled cleanly off the bone. I personally prefer a little more smoke flavor, but they were definitely a top 5 for me.

The pork was also well cooked and perfectly moist. If I was forced to find something to complain about, it would be that again, I would want more smoke. That is a personal preference though, and not a critique. A flavorful hot sauce and an unusual sweet sauce (maybe a hint of molasses?) added plenty of interest to the delicious bites of pork. Added to the corn cake, it made a heavenly combo.

The sides and dessert also exhibited the attention to detail practiced here. We enjoyed a vinegar slaw which complimented the pork perfectly, and fresh, crisp fried okra straight out of the fryer.

I’ve eaten a lot of banana pudding at barbecue places- probably the most common dessert- but this was the best one I could remember. Only the pudding was premade; the bananas were freshly sliced and vanilla wafers just out of the box so nothing was soggy.

I don’t know whether this had anything to do with the fact that the National Banana Pudding Festival was being held in Centerville the next day, but I think this one would have been a contender in any contest. I briefly considered going back the next day for more, but other plans were already being made. But man, I hope to get back sometime. The food and the people here have a special ingredient. It’s love, and you can taste it.
