A cute place with a warm cozy esthetic. Great service, good coffee, and great food cooked to order. The menu is very robust with lots of options for just about any mood you’re in. My food came out and was exactly what I wanted and so good. I’ll be back to try everything I can!

If you’re hunting for that cozy “Luke’s Diner” vibe in West Asheville, Papa Dunk’s Family Kitchen is it. Retro 50s oldies on the speakers, warm smiles at the counter, and actually reasonable prices in West Asheville—win, win, win.
We came on day two of opening and loved it. The Breakfast Club sandwich hit the spot, the non-dairy shake was downright delicious and served in a classic shake cup, and the coffee (Dynamite Coffee) was excellent—and only three bucks. Menu’s stacked: breakfast all day, Reuben sandwiches, salads, classic egg cream, fresh-squeezed OJ (they’ve got the machine right there), $5 milkshakes, plus hotcakes/pancakes/waffles with eggs, bacon, or sausage around $14, and chicken & waffles for $15. It’s an easy call for breakfast or lunch.
The space feels homey and cozy—exactly the kind of spot you want to become a regular at.
Verdict: our new go-to for breakfast and brunch. Welcome to the neighborhood, Papa Dunk’s—West Asheville needed this.

We’d heard good things about Papa Dunk’s so my partner and I decided to try it out this past Saturday morning. We got there around 10:15 and there was nobody else there, although two other parties did pull up within 10 minutes after us.
Our first thought was that the server/cashier did not look like they wanted to be there or anywhere customer facing. Now I’m not expecting white-tie service or anything, but they just seemed unkempt and the cashier kept coughing, sometimes into her hands, and never used hand sanitizer or washed her hands, nor was she wearing any kind of mask, so that initially put us off. They were both kind in verbal interactions, it was just unexpected past that.
Then we went to order. First they were out of coffee (weird for having a local AVL coffee but I digress), then they were also out of the strawberry milkshakes. For having such a small menu, being out of two things by 10 on a Saturday seems like a lack of preparation, but sometimes businesses get chaotic and things get forgotten. I get it.
Then we got our food. I paid $14 for a single waffle with butter (no fruits or whipped cream), two average scrambled eggs, and two of the smallest sausage patties I’ve ever been served. I added the home fries as a side, but they were barely seasoned. My partner got the Old Reliable and had the same complaints, small (but tasty) sausage, average eggs, and dry, barely seasoned home fries.
All this to say, I’ve worked food service before, I’ve worked retail before. I’ve done clopens and not wanted to be at work before. So I’m not here to unilaterally shit on the employees. Every situation is different.
I am here to say that our visit didn’t live up to the expectations set by reviews I’ve seen on here and recommendations I’ve seen on Reddit. The taste was sub-par and everything was well over-priced ($8 for a glass of fresh squeezed orange juice) in comparison.
We’ll be back to try some of the other offerings and I hope that I can edit this with improvements at that time.

My kid and I went in the evening last Saturday and we had a great time. I ordered the Carolina burger a he got a plain cheese burger. They were big fat juicy burgers cooked perfectly. Emily did a fantastic job all around.

I was prepared to love this place and I was excited to try it but they served me the single most worst meal I may have ever had in my entire life. It was so bad I genuinely wondered if the kitchen was pranking me. Their “homemade corned beef hash” was a single slice of bone-dry meat (?) on top of a pile of unseasoned soggy hashbrowns with bread toasted on only one side. Unbelievably bad.
