I visited Panera Bread in Detroit in Sept 2025. It remains a staple for anyone looking for a quick, “healthy-ish” meal in a cozy environment. Whether you are looking for a quiet corner to work or a fast lunch, it provides that classic café atmosphere that people have come to expect from the brand.

Vegetarian Options:
There is an excellent variety for vegetarians. I particularly enjoyed the Baja Bowl, which is packed with quinoa, black beans, and avocado. Other top-tier picks include the Mediterranean Veggie Sandwich on zesty Peppadew pepper bread, the iconic Broccoli Cheddar Soup, and the Green Goddess Cobb Salad.

History:
Originally starting in 1987 as the St. Louis Bread Company, Panera has grown into a nationwide favourite. They were pioneers in the “fast-casual” movement, focusing on “clean food” by removing artificial preservatives and sweeteners while maintaining a bakery-first approach to their menu.

Main Attraction:
The biggest draw for locals is the Unlimited Sip Club. This subscription allows for endless coffee, teas, and chargers, making Panera a primary “third space” for Detroit students and remote workers who need a reliable place to sit and plug in for a few hours.
Popular Food & Combos: The “You Pick Two” deal is the undisputed king of their menu. This popular combo allows you to pair any two half-portions of their salads, sandwiches, or soups. Most patrons, myself included, love pairing a half-sandwich with a bowl of soup. The Toasted Frontier Chicken Sandwich and the creamy Mac & Cheese are frequently cited in reviews as the ultimate

comforting meal combo.
Affordable Food with Great Taste and Quality: Despite the rising costs of dining out, I found the value here to be impressive. I particularly liked:

Freshness:
The sourdough and bagels are baked fresh daily, and you can really taste the difference in the crust and texture.

High-Quality Ingredients:
From the crisp arugula to the ripe avocados, the produce feels premium rather than mass-produced.

Consistent Flavour:
You always know exactly what you’re getting; the seasoning is well-balanced across their entire soup and sandwich range.

Improvements Suggested: keeping stock levels consistent for popular items like soufflés would prevent disappointment for early-morning visitors.

Atmosphere:-
I visited during lunch and at that time it was calm and nice. Staff welcome with smile and friendly.

I received my food and noticed the “grilled cheese” sandwich wasn’t grilled at all. It was warmed up bread in the microwave.. ZERO grilled anything.. my son is on the spectrum and this is the ONLY thing he will eat there, it has been his go to food at Panera for the last 11 years. I asked the girl at the front if I could please get this grilled since it’s supposed to be grilled cheese. She said “sorry that’s how it comes”. I said “I’m sorry, you’re telling me the grilled cheese is now warm bread with melted cheese in it, not grilled or toasted???” And she responded with “yes, sorry. That’s how it comes” and she walked away. As a local business owner I can assure you that’s not great customer service and it’s no wonder that location is empty so much. I would never be ok with my own customers leaving unhappy and that’s exactly how I left.
Let me say, I was initially annoyed that the kid that took our order was non stop wiping his nose and proceeded to hand me my tea cup, and my son’s juice. I overlooked it, because it’s that time of year and at least he showed up for work..then I had to clean a table off myself (with my own wipes) to even sit down to eat.. every table was dirty. No one was in there but every table was filthy.. then I get the food and the above happened. I was pretty shocked at how rude she was about it too, but I sat down again so my son could at least eat his soup, I didn’t want him to start crying. (He doesn’t do change well but he doesn’t do confrontation even more) I just told him he couldn’t get a new sandwich because the toaster was broken, but he can still eat his soup and eat his baguette.
He don’t eat much (he was probably overthinking it about not having his grilled cheese in his mind, they go together) so I decided to just get a To go container and leave. I walked over to get it and saw a different kid, that was serving all the food, standing with his back to me blowing his nose over and over.. he wiped his handed on his pants the proceeded to DISH UP FOOD!!! At that point I was so disgusted I just wanted to leave without the leftovers. I’ll never go back to the westlake location even though it’s by my house. I will drive to Ricky River, where the manager there is incredible! He is always helpful and the restaurant is clean!!

Panera Bread completely ruined my order not once, but FOUR times! It’s beyond ridiculous how they can’t get something so simple right. Then, to top it all off, the worker got mad at us for absolutely no reason—he acted like we were judging him because of his sexuality, which made the whole situation super awkward and uncomfortable. I don’t care about anyone’s personal stuff, but when you’re working with customers, you need to keep it professional. This was hands down one of the worst service experiences I’ve ever had.

A 10 dollar toasted garden caprese sandwich… (let the photo speak for itself) When we went up to the counter for them to correct whatever was missing they just handed us a cup of lettuce instead of offering to remake it. It was missing the balsamic, greens, and who knows what else. I think half of it was made on a different kind of bread even? I’ve had this at other Panera locations and it’s been really good and looked nothing like this.

I work for DoorDash, had an awful experience picking up an order. The lady is either some manager, or team lead. She had an awful attitude, couldn’t find my order. She said to me “order was already picked up”. I was about to contact DoorDash. Then she finds it, places the bag on the counter and doesn’t say a word. It was interesting because she treated the white gentleman before me very kindly. She either hates her job, hates women, or hates people of color. Maybe all three. Who knows!

We came to pick up breakfast for our grandson’s 4th birthday. We ordered bagels and cinnamon rolls. All were served cold. Bagels were not sliced. Forgot the utensils. Crap food. We were there a few minutes before 9am. I spoke to the person behind the counter and asked… Your chicken soup is my grandson’s favorite. I know it’s still breakfast but could I get a bowl? It can be cold. We’ll heat it up. The manager looked right at me and said…. We don’t get the soup out until 9:30 and walked away. I hadn’t been to a Panera for about 6 years. I will never be back.

The term “ripped off” is the best way to describe how I’m feeling about my most recent visit here; I just spent $2.99 for what I thought would be a large iced tea, I got something I can finish in 3 gulps.

The food isn’t bad, it’s just WAY overpriced, there is no value here.

Thoroughly enjoyed their hot Chicken Bacon Rancher Sandwich – it was so tasty, really great sandwich and service. Grabbed a sandwich to go on a busy day after haircut at Zen in same plaza.
